Like the kind you use so you won't disturb your partner in bed...

I can only offer a negative, unfortunately. I have had three different models that work off a battery, and all three seem to use up batteries at the rate of one a week. One came from B&N, another from the Lillian Vernon catalogue and the other was a gift. One that plugs in would be ideal for using to avoid annoying spouse, but would not be portable.

All N is not equal. The article discusses trying to get N to the branch tips early in the season. This is when you target its absorption to feed the spur leaves on bearing age trees. A boost of N at this time will generally enhance crop set and fruit quality. This is because you are feeding the spur leaves and not the growing annual shoots. Excessive growth of vegetative wood will shade your spur leaves and nearby shoots (pencils) that feed fruit more than new wood. If you live where rain is scarce during the growing season you can prevent this by reducing irrigation, even if there's lots of available N- here in the northeast you want to be careful to time your application to feed the part of the tree you want. I handle this by soil application around late Sept- a pound or 2 actual N per 1,000 sq. ft, but based on the general vigor of the trees. Trees that I'm trying to size up in a hurry get a split ap with one at about mid-spring. If I was growing fruit to sell and not to please homeowners I'd probably do urea sprays at this time (late summer) instead. I'd also do leaf analysis to try to pinpoint rates. I don't think this is necessary in home orchard situations.

I'd love to get some leaf cuttings of your mini av's if possible. But I don't have any daylillies. Do you think you might want to look at my list and see if I have anything of interest to you?

Read the FAQ, can I direct sow w/ mini greenhouses?
Q

rj_hythloday, The pragmatist in me says: If you're going to be gone, who will tend and harvest? Sounds almost like a year not to bother. I tried last year with the unexpected death of my parents, and although I had already WSed many items, it was quite a challenge to keep things up last summer. the optimist in me (hoping that your partner would indeed water and pay more attention to the garden in your absence) says: I can see how you would want to push things up a step and direct sow so that there would be no transplanting. You can use the tops of milk jugs as cloches, but that really wouldn't be Winter Sowing. It would be Direct Sowing. I still keep looking at your abreviated list thinking "oh my god...if i sowed that and had to be away for three months, everything would be dead and brown when i got back." (lol) Linda

Finished Edgar Sawtelle/Looking for Another Great Read

Try Gail Godwins The Good Husband; Ive read several of hers, and think its her best. I have Sawtelle on my TBR shelf and really need to read it soon. I choose books by mood as well. There are some I just can't read (still wish I could remove certain images from my mind: Fall on your Knees and Pillars of the Earth, Im looking at you!) I do agree that fiction that >well written, entertaining and inspiring stories about human perseverance. ...But fiction created to do so leaves me anguished most of the time I know exactly what you mean (see my examples above, but don't read them!) And yes, non fiction is amazing in its ability to inspire as well as entertain and teach. But good authors no how to inspire as well as entertain. I can think of many who do this. For example, I just finished Guernsey Literary Society, about the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands, and for all the brutality, found it a splendid read. Not heartwarming or twee, as I feared, but a good read about people who do overcome great odds, and do so without bitterness, and with compassion for their fellow man. How timely--I nearly posted about the same dilemma last week. One of my children needs one; we've used "headlamps" like Grelobe posted, but this time wanted a plug-in type which clips to the headboard. Cheap was another requirement since said child loves to, um, tinker. Found a gooseneck style at Target but the gooseneck isn't strong enough to hold the lamp up once the light is clipped to the headboard so the gooseneck has to be staked to the headboard like a tomato and it is difficult to move it out of the way of the sleeper who bumped his head on it. Next?

I was looking at book lights at Wal-Mart a few weeks ago and picked up one that looked promising. When I flipped the box over to read the reasons I should choose that particular one, the very first statement listed was: Enjoy your book while sleeping! I actually laughed out loud while the people milling around me backed away very quickly in case I was dangerous.

The book light I've been using for several months is one I purchased from Books-A-Million. The good thing is that it still has the original battery in it even though I've used it often. The bad thing is that the reason it still has the original battery in it is because it uses LED bulbs. That's a bad thing because I find LED lighting very uncomfortable for reading, but some people don't mind it. This particular light is inexpensive, folds flat, and has two brightness settings. I believe that it's this one, which might work for you if you don't mind LED.

I also found this amusing article from Slate about the author's quest for the perfect reading light.

I enjoyed the article from Slate, thanks for posting it! I think we've been through every version of reading light at our house, and my favorite is still the "old" version of the itty bitty book light. The drawback is the price, but after spending money on several cheaper versions, this is still my favorite. It comes in other versions which are less expensive - you can get it with just the battery pack or just the plug in option. I like the light, there isn't a glare, and it can be positioned however you would like.
