Propagating Alyogyne

Does anyone on the forum propagate Alyogyne's by any chance, as I'm after some info on their strike rates etc. I have put a couple of cuttings in the hothouse today in the hope of getting them to strike.

I can't see them being too hard to strike but interested in other members opinions.

I have had no problems striking A. heugelii from cuttings in Brisbane. I'm not sure where you are but with a hot house you should do OK.

Strike fine for me in melbourne. I've even struck them directly in the ground.

It looks like I might have B. 'Looking Glass' coming, through an unrelated trade. However I am still looking for plants with "Alice" in the name, although at this point I'm most interested in those with an Alice in Wonderland related theme, whether or not "Alice" is in the name. For example there are a number of cultivars of various plants called "Queen of Hearts." All of the cuttings above can be duplicated if necessary and will still be available. .............................................................................. Since another day has passed, I'll add something else. Alyogyne hakeifolia, 100 seeds. These were freshly harvested yesterday. I add so many partly because I have a lot, and also because people have had mixed experience germinating these seeds. Some find them easy. I find them moderately difficult although I do get some germination. Alyogyne hakeifolia was formerly Hibiscus hakeifolia. It's best known relative is Alyogyne huegelii, also known as the "blue Hibiscus". This form has yellow tulip shaped flowers with a red spiral in the center, and striking needle-shaped leaves. A rooted cutting at first bloom and seedlings of two sizes: A flower on the mother plant seen from above: I've never seen the plant for sale in the U.S., although Kartuz has it "out of stock" in their catalog. Previously known as Hibiscus huegelii, now Alyogyne huegelii "As Alyogyne are from the same family as Hibiscus, information on propagation for hibiscus is appropriate for Alyogyne, both for growing from seed or from cuttings. Propagation can be from seed, which keeps its viability for a number of years. It is helpful to rub the seed against a file or an emery board before planting the seed as this treatment will break through the hard protective coating and allow moisture to penetrate. Germination will be much faster after this treatment." "Hibiscus - nick and soak overnight. Seeds can be planted in a commercial seed starting medium or a mix can be made out of some combination of sand, perlite, vermiculite and Canadian peat. The seeds are planted 1/4 to 1/2" deep in the mixture and should germinate in a week to a month on average. It is best to keep the temperature about 80 to 85Â° F (about 28Â° C) and the medium moist, but not soggy. A heat mat to provide bottom heat is helpful."

In Oklahoma, it is also difficult to find the Blue Satin Hibiscus syriacus. In early Spring, a year ago, I was looking for one to train into a patio tree form. After checking numerous nurseries, I finally found some at Colebrook Nursery in NE OK. The ones they had were growing in 3 gallon pots, but had been trained to grow as a shrub. After purchasing one of them, I pruned away all but the best looking stem, which in only a year seems to be nicely taking on the role of a single main leader trunk. This Blue Satin is amazing. It survived the 9 month drought period we had last year. It also survived the early spring warm-up this year, which was followed quickly by a sudden hard freeze. By late Spring of this year, many people in the area lost even well established plants, trees, and shurbs. My Blue Satin Hibisus syriacus showed no signs of stress from its establishing period's difficult growing condions. All I have and am still doing for it, is to water it regularly with our city water, which is clorinated. As bad as last year's climate conditions were, this week has presented an even worse condition. The Blue Satin is now surviving nicely even with the excessive heat situation of this last week and a half. Daily high temps. have ranged from 100 to 104. The National Weather Service predicts tomorrow's high temps to reach 105 before the Weekend's high temps drop down to the 90s again. All the while My 'Blue Satin' keeps blooming, and shows no sign of environmental distress. I am really surprised that the Blue Satin seems to keep up with my Chaste trees in its tollerance level for our sometimes overlapping and fluxuating USDA zone 6 winter and current, what would be expected in an USDA zone 9 area's, summer conditions.

Uh, I think that one is called 'Imagination', David! All the hardy perennial hibiscus, Hibiscus moscheutos, I know of are white, pink, red, or some combination of those colors. When you posted I wondered if there was some new variety that had come out since I left the green industry--over ten years now--so I googled blue hibiscus! As I expected I would, I came up with 'Blue River II', but that's a WHITE flower! Also came up with 'Blue Satin'---but that's a Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus, and, like most "blue" flowers, it's really lavender! Also came up with a tropical called 'Cajun Blue'---but that's lavender too--and definitely not hardy! The tropicals do get into the yellows and oranges---but no blue--regardless of what they've named it! Found a reference to a Blue Hibiscus on hibiscus.org: "...is neither "blue" nor a "hibiscus." It's an Alyogyne huegelii! Getting WAY off into, for me, uncharged territory in Tropicals Land! And it's lavender! Found some photoshopped pics! And found some very poor photos that were blue! If someone were ever able to hybridize a truly blue hibiscus, they'd be able to live the rest of their life in the Lap of Luxury! I do wonder what you saw! My guess would be it was an ad for the 'Blue Satin'---with a VERY misleading photo! If you ever find it again, let me know what it is, Skybird

Thanks Tony & Nathan - I'm s/e of Melbourne and thought they'd be O.K. in the hothouse. I've dipped in some IBA which won't hurt them.

I'm rather dubious of IBA and IPA for cuttings, my own experiment, with 40 cuttings of various species with and without fresh commercial rooting hormone found no statistical significance. On the other hand, weekly watering with seaweed and charlie carp was markedly better, with 50% strike rate within 3 months, compared to 50% dead within three months. I haven't tried honey properly, perhaps that's a project for this year.

My personal feeling about cuttings is that your main aim is to keep the plant alive long enough for it to realise it should grow roots. This means regular water, complete drying above ground level, regular foliar feeding and optimum growing conditions. vitamin B is probably helpful for this too.

In some cases the use of a plant hormone isn't warranted as some plants eg. Correa will strike "in a lot of cases", just in the ground. But using it doesn't have any nasty effects on the cutting as such. I use IBA 3000 ppm in talc and get very good strike rates on my correa's, but a lot has to do with the propagation mix, available warmth, water, temperature fluctuations, luck etc.
During spring/summer when temperatures are above 20c I use a misting system, as cuttings need to have a warm root system compared to the foliage which needs to be kept moist/cooler. When all these factors come together you get roots and hormones do not neccessary mean you get good strike rates.
I've currently got hundreds of cuttings in my hothouse, one cutting per 2" tube, all dipped in IBA 3000 and from this total I expect to get over 90% strike rate.

What works for one person, may not work for another. As for honey "It's good on toast"

My point was that I found no measurable advantage to using IBA or IPA. Using it thus would seem illogical/expensive/time consuming. Perhaps you would get very good strike rates without using the powder?

I have thousands of cuttings too, and generally for commercially available species get high 90s% strike rate. You say you use 2" tubes, do you mean forestry tubes? I switched a few years back to 1" clear polystyrene thumb pots, as I've found that struck plants do just as well in the ground in that size, they give me 4 times the plant density and being clear it is a simple matter to see the root development. They are also very cheap (3c each I think I paid), and you can crush them up and use them in potting mix when they break.

My question is 'what do you do with all your cuttings?'.

And honey is good in Chai.

In the long run, I believe some plant varieties do benefit from hormone treatments, as there are some that are very difficuly to get roots on. As for me I use what I know works for me in my situation.

I use ordinary 2" tubes (not native/forestry) and the cutting is placed individually in each to stop any root disturbance.

What do I do with all my cuttings? - I have a project in mind for later in the year - If it doesn't pan out, then there'll be a plant sale come Spring. :-)
