Australian wildlife

I do hope I can get some information here and not be told to not worry about what I'm referring to.....this is a proxy question....

My young niece is coming to Australia in February for a year...she's garnering a teacher's certificate and is travelling to Brisbane...but....

she's hearing all sorts of things about the wildlife...especially spiders and snakes.

She is deathly afraid of spiders....any size of 'em...and figures they will be even where the snakes aren't.

Australia is the home of some of the most deadly snakes and she's a-fearful enough about them....let alone the spiders.

So what should she do about getting over this fear....she pondered for a long time before accepting Australia as the place to do her foreign assignment....but Australia being a lot warmer than Canada in winter, she has trepidation. though.

I will say tho....she looks pretty good in a bikini and is an avid swimmer. Australia was the choice rather than France.

I'd appreciate anything you want to say about this matter.

Of course we have many of those nasties here doesn't every Country, City and Town in the world but they don't roam the streets of Brisbane she will probably be very lucky if she sees a snake here. I live 35kms south of Brissie on a 3/4 acre block across the road from a river and in the 8 years I have been here I have only seen one snake on our land a green tree snake.. I left it alone and it went on it merry way after all its their backyard too.. Snakes are protected here in Australia

Now before that I lived up North Qld on a larger block and it was nothing to see snakes crossing the block or pythons in the chook *Hen* yard and redback spiders everywhere but if you don't touch you don't get bitten. I was leaning on a steel post talking to a neighbour and was bitten by a redback and received no medical attention that was years ago when I was in my 50's. Oh BTW I have never been bitten by a snake and have come across plenty in my time and I am female..

I would be more concerned about what is in the ocean after all the sharks would not care what you are wearing if they decided to take a bite.

Your Niece will be fine here and tell her not to worry Australia is a great place even with the wild life..

I have lived here for 50 years and have never been bitten by a spider.
I would worry more about the two legged pests than the eight legged ones

They'll be telling us next we can only grow either 'natives' or 4 species of introduced exotics in our gardens! I say 'stick it'! Its becoming the Coles and Woolworths of the plant kingdom and its b/s!

hmmm, I don't like using pesticides at all, and I don't want to either to control my plague. I hope some bandicoots find my house then!! Plenty of other wildlife around - just wish the birds would realise what a feast of slaters are in the garden beds and compost and all my pot plants! I havn't sprayed anything in the garden for a few years now - everything seems to look after it self, the wasps and birds clean up all the bugs that eat my plants, but there doesn't seem to be anything that has been able to control the slaters. But...I did seasol the other day around all my pot plants too, and when I was checking for slaters last night - it did seem as though there were a lot less around. I don't know if it is due so the cooler weather that has arrived - or the fact I seasoled on the weekend, so maybe that is helping their numbers. I think I will just have to deal with them and live with them and just hope their population drops - which I think it has with the cooler weather. Might try the beer trap - if anything I will trap some snails too - as they love beer! Rach

Thanks Dee, that's what I meant. I thinks logs or some sort of edging, seem to finish off a garden bed nicely. We are slowly edging our beds but as they are so long we are having trouble finding enough logs. I don't want to buy timber as we want a more natural look. As for the plants growing faster, I think the logs help stop water and mulch running off. No doubt you will get termites though. If I see any around I chuck the logs into the chook pen and let the chooks have a feed then get rid of the logs. They are all part of the natural process and as long as they're not near your house and you keep your eyes open you shouldn't have a problem

Why take the risk? Macbirch, I understand exactly what you're saying. Planting natives does sometimes/often seem like a risk because we just don't have the collective knowledge about natives as we do exotics. About 2 years ago, I wanted to plant a hedge along the boundary between my native garden and my neighbour's property. I really liked the idea of using waratahs, but at that stage I'd never tried to grow one, and, since you don't see them around that much, thought they must be difficult. I decided not to take the risk and planted callistemons instead, at least they where natives. Anyway, I've since had great success growing 2 waratahs (even moved one), so I've decided to take out the callistemons, which aren't getting enough sun anyway, and replace them with waratahs. My point is that if I'd had the confidence in the first place, and got some decent advice from my local nursery, I wouldn't be now, 2 years down the track, going to all the work and expense of replacing the callistemons with what is afterall, a plant indigenous to the Blue Mountains! You'd think there'd be a waratah nursery here wouldn't you? No, I have to drive 40 minutes just to get to a native nusery, and that looks like it could close down any time soon. Waz, young people like you are the key. I hope you never grow exotics, never learn about them or decide you like them. Oh, and I hope you and Artie continue to be outspoken about people like me who grow roses. If I build another house and start a garden from scratch, things will be different.

there are nasty critters in most countries in the world, and i'm sure cnada has its share i mean they have the kodiak grizzly bears they not only bite buth they eat ya as well.

it is a phobia shared by many i saw on tv over hare there is someplace i think in qld might be one of the nature/reptile parks who hold clinics to help people over these phobias, they do this in a couple of hours, side benefit she gets to meet some of our wildlife first hand.

i apricularly don't like spiders on me or near me, as well as snakes but i don't go all to pieces over it, and also as has been said for all the venomous snakes and spiders we have only those who go where others dare ever get bitten and very few suffer any critical consequence, you could go swimming at the beach and get bit by a shark hey?? probably got a better chance of winninbg lotto?

just tell her we are a civilised country and all the wild nasty critters are outback! in the bush. and as a visitor her chances of even seeing one of them would be more remote than being hit by a mack truck in your back garden.
