my tom story during winter

Hi All

Not too sure you might be interested but I thought I might report my winter activities.

I have for a year now had a little glass house (3mts x 3mts ) and as an initial experiment planted toms in March, I picked 18 kilo of half green and ripe toms in July. It was perfect really because as the green " turned" ripe slowly we were able to use all the fruit.

Interestingly after the plants had finished cropping I cut them off to just the base. Well two have regrown and right now are flowering again but the plants are half size so far and growing slowly.. Not loaded with flower but worth the effort to keep them going. I am growing using hydroponics.

I have lots of other veggie in there as well and tonight we are eating a totally home grown meal for dinner.Super fresh no sprays at all.

I am needing some help with Chinese cabbage. I planted about 15 plants but oddly they have matured differently..Some have formed a head with others are open leafed. Is it they were presented to me incorrectly or has some thing gone wrong in my growing of them?

Thank you too Patrina who gave to me some potato leafed tom seed.They are starting to flower right now and look really healthy.

Also growing Bok Chow,traditional cabbage, other vars of toms, and some peppers..

It's great to be eating your own produce. Can't help with the Chinese cabbage question, sorry. Perhaps it's just a variable plant. What variety was it?

Hi Raymondo...I have watched this forum from afar. Some top knowledge here being shared and that's why I sit and read, the learning never stops and I got a lot of that to do. I bought two punnets of cabbage, and I am afraid while I remember the Chinese Cabbage bit the rest on the label escapes me. Four plants have heads the others are open, Punnets of 8 plants each. I suspect it not the growing of them but the way there were sold that is the problem. Thanks Raymondo nice to meet you.

Yes, unfortunately you do need to protect them from snow and hard frosts if it goes on for weeks. Overnight, well that is a different story. The danger is really in a fast thaw, but do protect sweet peas from extended hard freezes. I have been growing them each year for many years; there are a few freezes here in No Cal, but they do not last; so prevention from snowfall is not necessary. They are cold weather hardy it is true, which is why they do so well in England; but they do protect them there from snow in cold frames. By all means, move them into the garage if you wish to; but keep it cool in there, too. They are best kept outside in the cold as long as you can, but if you are worried about snow, then the garage is the right place. They benefit most from long slow root development, so getting them into the ground asap or as soon as you can, is the goal.

Ok not a winter story so doesn't count, but cute and I had to share. Jordan (age 4) was sleeping over Sunday night and grandpa asked her to go get his cup from the bathroom. Grandpa proceeded to take out his teeth and put them in the cup. Jordan had never seen him do this before and had to look in his mouth. She had to look for quite some time to figure out what just happened. She then looked in his cup and said, "Wow Grandpa! The tooth fairy is going to bring you lots of money!!!" Grandpa just laughed and said big people don't get money from the tooth fairy...after much explaining, grandpa finally just agreed that he would get lots of money...there is no reasoning with a 4 year old who believes :) Later at night I hear my husband yell, "what the h---! Turn on the light". What I ask groggy??? He yells "TURN ON THE LIGHT, TURN ON THE LIGHT"! I crack my head on the nightstand as I reach over to turn on the light fearing something really bad just happened. Once the light was on my husband flips over his pillow and there sits his dentures!!! I laughed so hard I forgot about the growing lump on my head. I guess Jordan was going to make sure grandpa got rich that night...Happy Holidays everyone. Kim

MM, You can do that for increased drainage, sure, but the plant looks better, IMO, with top dressing. There are some, including one of the world's top succulent plant growers (who also happens to contribute here) who is known to confidently avoid the almost-total use of top dressing (TD), even in cactus shows, where he enters in the non-competitive category because he got tired of winning, but then there are those on the other end, who can sometimes have twenty or more different top dressings. So what's my point? Yes, you can use that in your mix to improve drainage, but I'd suggest you smash it up a little bit, and use the crushed rock, along with some of the original TD

Thank you for all the compliments and help! As for soil, it does include some bark components, but is not a specific recipe or anything and does contain some regular soil. Now that I know of some good soil recipes from the forum, I was going to amend it with either the coco-husk or 5:1:1 recipes. Although, it does seem to be doing great in what it is in. Yeah, the only huge lemon I know of is Ponderosa also, so I assume it can or is a Ponderosa. But since every Ponderosa I have seen or grew always fruited when young, I often have wondered if it is not, and maybe some weird Italian native that I do not know of? Mgk65, Thank you! I have learned something new again from you! I really have to find some info about leaf node #s and counts. Hopefully there is a thread here explaining it here in more detail on the forum? So, are the # of leaf nodes to fruit numbers pretty much the the same within one variety? Or, does the # of nodes before fruiting vary greatly even within the same variety? Does the leaf node count apply to just fruiting, or does it apply to when it starts to blossom also? Does a tree have to have a certain amount of leaf nodes before it just blossoms also? Peter, I did a quick Google on Chinese Cabbage. There are different types - some that develop heads, some leaf-oriented. Check out the attached link, particularly the detail under "Harvesting".

Maybe Finbar's hit the nail on the head - a punnet of mixed types. And nice to have you here Peter and hope to see your posts more regularly. By the way, my Chinese cabbage has begun to bolt. We've had 4 warm days and the plants think its summer. Boy, are they in for a surprise!

Yep, you are right Raymondo. I had so many cabbages I was a little lost as to what to do with them all. So today I cooked and cooked and stuffed those beauties good and proper. Most delicious I might say, and enough meals to last for quite some time. Just another ten to use up some how.
I noticed some subtle differences in the leaves and you are quite right. Cleverly the punnets were mixed cabbage. I think three different, but very similar open head types plus the more obvious heading type.
Now what to do with all the Bok choy?
