Have one myself, 3 metres tall already (2 years old), bit of a stick at the moment and hoping it will branch soon. Mine did go deciduous for a very short time but is back in full leaf. I am hoping it is only around 6m. The only photo I can find on the web is
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/22855/ (if you cut and paste the link). If you every get to the Mt Cootha Botanical gardens in Brisbane, there is a a couple of volumes of trees of South America and you will find many more specials of Jacaranda that are not available here.

Thanks Steve, I did check out that site when I was looking for some info on it. They seem to be an attractive tree. Mine is a bit under 1m so far and is fully back in leaf.

I haven't been to Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens for many years. I actually was married there (my first marriage) but haven't been back since. I try to avoid cities as much as possible now, I prefer my peace and quiet.

Does anyone else have one of these Jacarandas growing?

I believe I have one :) [have seen them mislabelled since then, and a friend's so-called PW jaca turned out to have deep mauve flowers with a white throat]
It was planted in a tough location about 2 years ago and is approx 1.8m high. Every leaf fell off it this spring and the fresh leaves now look quite good.
Most of the specimens I've seen in nurseries since have been grafted. Mine wasn't.

I finally found a spot to plant mine after a large tree ( chinese elm ) got removed that was lifting the driveway up, it has been in a large pot for some time, here's a pic of it taken shortly after planting a week ago:

I have had this growing for about 8 years - still no flowers - but is in a very tough spot - Has grown to 3m - has been deciduous some years but not this one. I think there is one growing on the bank up from the bandstand at Mt Cootha It seemed to have a much darker flower than the standard Jacaranda. Mine has formed extra trunks from the base which I will remove when it gets a bit sturdier.

Mine has three trunks coming up from the base, I think I will keep all three as its so lush and seems to be able to handle them all so far, if it should look like it is struggling in future may remove one and see what it does. I have seen Jac's with more than one main trunk and they look wicked, when fully grown. What do others reckon?

Just purchased one of these today, very excited to see it flower. To the person that has had one for 8 years and not flowered, I read an article just recently on jacarandas not flowering, it said to whack (gently) on one side of the bark only with a wooden stick with a flat head nail hammered into it, apparantly this makes them flower, maybe this will work for this jacaranda, has anyone been able to find a picture of an adult tree? the lable that came with ours, show purple flowers with a hint of a white throat. If any one is interested we have a white jacaranda growing here, (white christmas) does anyone else have one of these?

Yes, I've got a grafted white one and a grafted semiserrata. The semis. has only been in about a month and is growing rapidly. The white has been in about a year and is about 2 metres. No flowers yet. I think I read in Botannica's trees and Shrubs it can grown to 70 feet in the wild but much less in cultivation. In warm climates I suspect it can be a big tree. On giving them a good spanking to make them flower, that is generally true, but true to many if not all flowering plants, especially wooded ones. I do that to my bonsai wisteria each year and it flowers away like mad. If I don't, it doesn't. The same affect can be achived if you cultivate around the root zone and especially if you have to cut through a strong root for one reason or another. My horticulure teacher of years ago told me that a good spanking or root disturbance makes the plant think it is going to die so it attempts to hurridly reproduce itself, hence a good flowering season and subsequent seeding.

An update of my port wine jacaranda now 12 months in the ground and doing well its 6 foot tall now, took the third shoot off which was coming up the front, but kept the other two.

Hi, It has been interesting reading all the posts on the Jacaranda semiserrata. One point I would like to make is that this particular species is one which grows to a maximum five or six metres and is suitable for small gardens because it does not have a destructive root system. It does grow better with a single trunk as a start because more branches form from the single trunk than multiple ones. It does start off as a 'stick' and then over three to four years it starts to sprout branches quite profilically. Remove low branch growth to stop rot around the collar of the tree and start leaving the branches which form about 1.5 metres from the collar.

Having said all that, I have had to leave my six at my previous residence and the nursery at which I bought them no longer exists and I am desperate to buy some for this house. Could anyone help, please, with the name and contact of a nursery around the Sydney area which sells that species?
