Eucalyptus with purplish spots on leaves....

I got a new eucalyptus pauciflora niphophila that I received in the mail with what appear to be purplish spots on both sides of the leaves and extend from one side of the leaf to the other on nearly all leaves. I've done some looking at other such plants online, and some appear to have some mottling but nothing quite matching this.

Obviously the first thing that pops to my head is some sort of fungus, though this doesn't quite carry the look of a fungus I'm used to and hasn't as of yet caused deformations, yellowing of, or dying of the leaves.

A few small leaves have sprouted off the tree (it's not growing nearly as quickly as the eucalyptus debeuzevillei, but I wouldn't expect that).

Anyway, just curious if this is a known fungal problem I'm dealing with, and if so, any idea on the best fungicide to treat this with?

Rather, is this a fungus of the roots, the foliage, or what have you.

I got the plant out of a nursery in Oregon and will be recontacting them. Just wanted to get any feedback if I could. I'll try posting a picture tomorrow.

It would be good if you could post a picture of both sides of the leaves.

While there are some recognised diseases of Eucalyptus (both sides of the Big Pond) it seems curious to have your plant come complete with fungus out of a nursery in the first place (you'd expect great plant hygiene) or, if locally air-borne, to be so fast to attack.

We have a variety of sucking and leaf-eating insects in Australia that can cause damage depending on species and location - it might be hard to find an "un-touched" mature leaf in natural growing conditions. There are some forms of rust too, but you could tell the difference yourself.

It could simply be a bruising reaction to damage in transit?

99% certain it is a physiological problem called oedema (a term also applied to human/animal disorders but that's another story). It is common on container grown eucs in the Pacific Northwest and usually (mostly at least) clears up once the plant has been established for a year or two.

I have this also. On DA Charles Darwin and Double Delight (standard) They are in different parts of the yard different light hours. Maybe even my Moonstone (standard) They are not blooming well. I really haven't lost a lot of leaves. The stem black is only on Double Delight(bareroot this season). My other Double Delight is fine. For me I was wondering about being under the Eucalyptus tree and it's oil. But I don't think so because a lot of others thrive. It is frustrating because on one plant the leaves dry out and on another they stay hydrated yet look this way. I am guessing the different make up of each plant. My gut feeling is there is a fungus among us. So I will be spraying accordingly and see if that helps. Daisyhair how old is your rose plant? Allison

Hi Frank, Thanks for the advice - I did mean inside my house, but I will definitely take your advice under consideration. I know fig trees are obviously not the same as citrus, but I have a lime tree that has been doing extremely well for me for the past 4 years. I bring it in the house during the winter, and place it downstairs in our finished basement. I basically water it once a month, sparingly, and then begin to increase watering once spring comes. It has worked really well for that tree - the container the fig tree is now in has been my lime tree's home for the past two years, but it has gotten so big it needed to be replanted. I was planning on doing the same thing with the fig tree - bringing it in, placing it downstairs, and watering it sparingly over the winter. My lime tree too has been a fast grower, so I'm used to repotting. I definitely wasn't planning on fertilizing until next Spring. I don't fertilize anything over the winter, and my plants tend to do pretty well, so I was planning on following that same schedule with this guy. Thanks again! I appreciate your advice. Hydrangeas require some sunlight (morning or late afternoon, often referred to as "soft" sunlight), to bloom well. The macrophyllas (yours) also require an even applicaton of moisture during their active growing season. It is generally agreed, that the requirement is about 25mm (1 inch) per week. Those grown in containers will require more, due to the small soil mass and more rapid evaporation. With higher ambient temperatures, more evaporation will occur through the foliage (to keep it cool) and moisture requirements will escalate. Fertilization and frequency varies with location. In your area, addition of a slow release, balanced fertilizer can be applied twice each year, early spring and late summer. Rooted cuttings can benefit from a formula with extra phosphorus. I use a water soluble, 15-30-15, type during the first year of growth and after that, only an annual application of compost and/or leaf mold on the root zone. Don't know about prices of chemical fertilizer in AU, but the worldwide demand, especially in China & Africa, with limited supply sources, has driven up the price in the US to a point that it is almost unaffordable. Though it doesn't look like a deficiency to me, nor a disease either...you may want to simply call the customer service number and talk to the nursery. Most reputable places will be happy to look at your pictures and offer an explanation.

charlesmartel2, I experience this on some of my Eucalypts, I have looked for the prob online to see what is, but could not find any info, my nurseryman said it was nothing to worry about, and indeed some of my eucs seem to grow out of it, but one 2yearold tree I had actually died from it. I can only think it is stress, possibly caused from too much water, but Iam not 100% certain of this
