Spots on rose bush leaves

We inherited a pretty white floribunda (I think) rose in a large pot. After all the new leaves popped out they all got these small brown spots on the top side of the leaves. I sprayed the plant with an organic plant bug spray and a couple days later all the leaves had fallen off. Now the plant has all new leaves and they are beginning to get the same brown spots. Does anyone have any idea what they are and how to get rid of them? Thanks!

Yesterday I began noticing a similar appearance of sort of purplish spots on my rose bush leaves. I sprayed a few days ago with a new product that has spinosad in it. Could this be the cause?

In my case I had not sprayed anything in the yard prior to seeing the spots on the leaves.

This morning (29th July, our 40th Wedding Aniversary no less!) my cup runneth over. I looked at one of my Zephirine Drouhins and one of my Chandos Beauty roses, only to find on some of the leaves, what looked like a horrid, thick, rusty brown ooze in patches. What in the world is it? Google hasn't helped. Anyone got any ideas on what it might be, and how to treat it? I'm really having a miserable time with the roses: black spot has nearly decimated a load of them, then rust, and now, just for variation sake, The Ooze. Help, plooze.

Steffie, I'm hoping for rain next week because we haven't had much this month and the trees need it. OF course, before that rain falls I have a lot of stuff to get into the ground, so I hope it doesn't get here too quickly! I have been meaning to plant a New Dawn rose ever since we moved here, and think I have finally found the place I want to put one. Might have to go rose shopping soon! And, I agree, the fragrance from the florist's roses can't hold a candle to the fragrance from the roses in our gardens. I use scent as part of the criteria when selecting a rose. If it doesn't smell good, I don't want it! It HAS been a depressing week, first with the Virginia Tech shootings, then the anniversary of the OKC bombing, and, of course, the anniversary also of the Waco/Branch Davidian tragedy and the anniversary today of Columbine. I think this is the hardest week of the year, because the news stories are always full of remembrance of these tragedies. I have mostly left my TV turned off and retreated to my lawn and garden this week where it is generally peaceful and serene. My family says I am in "my own little world" when I am out in the garden. its invasive in many areas.. and if in your area... get rid of it ... its potential is 10 feet tall and 12 wide.. over the years... so its improperly sited ... bugs had nothing to do with this.. this plant is nearly indestructible ... you could take a mature one.. and cut it to 3 inches.. and within a year or two... it would be bigger than it was before ... i suspect herbicide damage ... cut it to the ground.. and see what happens ... ken

I love that plant, one of my favorites. I grew it at my old house and now at my new one. I did get those leaves on the lower branches and would spray with Bayer fungicide hose end sprayer and that seemed to take care of it

Hi Patti! Welcome to the Rose Forum. Your rose doesn't have bugs, its a fungus disease. Rose foliage is susceptible to many assorted fungal diseases and most roses need to be sprayed with a fungicide in our climate to protect the foliage. Start spraying in early spring and spray (just a quick mist) with fungicide every two weeks during the growing season.

Looks like anthracnose, a fungal disease similar to blackspot. Try a fungicide or just leave them be. It will clear up when the whether gets drier. Please be careful what you spray. Many sprays are highly toxic, can kill the good with the bad, and remain [toxic] in the soil and water.

Thank you so much for your help! I will try a fungicide. The bug spray I used was an organic one so hopefully it didn't hurt anything that's beneficial. You all are great! : )

Is there a safe spray for use on black spot? my climbing roses are in my herb garden. This is the second or third season I've lost most of the foliage on the plants, and after reading posts realize I need to jump on this earlier, but for now any suggestions?

In my no-spray garden I find it works well to let the roses fend for themselves regarding blackspot.

They get black spot and drop leaves, however they grow well and bloom well.

I think that organic fertilizers build the soil to create an environment where the roses do well, even with blackspot present in the garden.

Mama Timms, I personally would NOT spray a rose in an herb garden. There are fungicides labelled as safe for agricultural use (think apple trees and veggies) but I'd be more comfortable yanking out the rose and replacing it with a disease resistant variety. Choosing a climber depends on where you live.

I notice that my rose leaves are getting this purplish spot on some of the new leaves. Can anyone tell me what's the problem here?

Patti can you post a photo of the back of one of your leaves. The only reason I'm thinking it's not anthracnose is because you said it dropped the leaves. Anthracnose spotted leaves stay on the plant a long time and the leaf tends to stay green where the spots aren't. If you removed the leaves instead than yes it is most likely anthracnose.
