Lemon Tree

Have had my Myer lemon tree for 2 years now. Every year the young lemons look good at first, get to the size of a small marble, turn a light green and drop off. I have fertilized with citrus product and have tried to do the right thing but to no avail. What could be the problem?

hi there firstly you may have a water problem when they are fruiting the need deep watering and the other thing is you have a boron deficiency you need to apply trace element mixture and water in apply every 3 months for 1 year then stop. Damian

my mother just got a myer lemon tree and has no idea how to care for it. she is an good gardener and has lots and i mean lots of different plants, form all over the U.S. i was just wondering if you could share with me the basic things to take care of the dwarf myer lemon tree. thank you very much.

Growing most types of fruit from seed is generally a bad idea. There is a high chance the fruit will not be as good as the parent variety. For those of you who are not aware of how this works, in nature fruit species can have a lot of genetic diversity from generation to generation. When a good producing tree is found, it then gets propagated from cuttings. People usually do not want to take the trouble of growing a fruit tree from seed when they do not even know whether the fruit will be good. Generally though, lemons produce truer to seed than oranges do. Not talking about citrus here, but for fruit trees in general, it is theoretically possible to breed fruit that produces truer to seed, but it takes many more generations of breeding. These are often traditional heirloom varieties that have been around a long time. Whereas the seed from a Navel orange will not really result in a Navel variety, some of these heirloom varieties can essentially be continually propagated from seed. The terms "heirloom", "true to seed", and fruit "variety" can all be very relative and ambiguous terms.

Hi All, I need some Meyer lemon assistance. I received a dwarf tree in the spring from QVC thru mycitrustree(dot) com. I had some beautiful blossoms in the summer and now have 2 lemons about 3 inches and 3 1/2 long. It was kept outside and watered as needed in addition to Mother Nature. I live in NJ and it was about to dip into the 40's one night so I brought it into my basement two weeks ago. I watered it before I brought it in and it got a soaking rain too. It's in a pot with drain access and it still moist. It has also now begun to bud on all end branch A LOT. My original question is some random leaves are turning yellow. They are not dry or curling and have no pests. The leaf veins are also not turning white. I am a nervous first time fruit tree mother. I did not give any fertilizer since I received it in the spring. Yes, Adrian, bag or any other humidity increase method is essential for the graft to take. It should be over the scion and cut from the moment you do the the graft, up to 10-20 days. This is the reason parafilm is used to cover all the scion. Bag should be sealed with rubber band or anything else, but in your case I think now it is futile to cover. 3 days without protection is enough for the cuts to dry out and not heal. I would re-read one of the tree/graft by shorting both the rootstock and scion with about 1cm, and then covering them with proper parafilm/food foil/strip of plastic bag/teflon tape etc. Then I would put a plastic bag over the whole scion-graft area, selling-it with rubber band. Grafted tee should be kept in shadow for the next 2-3 weeks. Then we will talk again.

Did your trees receive adequate water this year? Were any lawn fertilizers applied near the tree? Was the tree mulched to reduce water evaporation?

I have a Lisbon and a Myer. I didn't want two but a stressed relative gave me a stressed Myer ten years ago so I now have the two.

What make good lemons - liquid fertiliser, the sort produced by men after drinking beer and standing infront of the tree :-))

I need help for a Myer Lemon also. It has caterpillars that look like lizard poop.(obviously they are in disguise) It also has leaf miners. I have tried all kinds of things from home depot and lowes. Nothing is working. I put the insect killer directly on the caterpillars and it didn't even phase them.

Carbaryl (wetable powder at 30 grams per 4.5ltrs)is the poison for caterpillars and Dimethoate (Rogor) is the poison (with water as per label instructions)will fix the leafminer problem. HTH teddy,J

if you have clay soil, the problem could be waterlogging.
Try dolomite lime around the base of the tree over winter. This will at first make the tree a little yellow and then as the lime works the leaves should green up. Dolomite creates good soil structure and reduces the acidity caused by the heavy feeding that lemons require. Plant lots of flowering plants in the bed to provide habitat for aphids and other pests so that your garden supports a healthy predator population Manually remove any leaf miner and put it in the bin. Check for the presence of lace bug, lady beetles and praying mantis before spraying (and dont spray if they are there). rogor can affect the leaves and reduce productivity in some plants. Try pestoil for scales or large infestations of leaf minor if you have no predators.
Feed the soil and the tree will produce.

I have lost all my leafs on the tree,and the new leafs coming in have tiny little black bugs on them and I also found 2 catapillers on it.
Can you tell me what this may be and how to get rid of them.

My lemon tree is established and most of my lemons are growing with a hard, almost calcified skin. What can I do to avoid this?

The branches on my tree are covered with tumors,,What can i do to get rid of them.Several years ago i pruned the the tree right back but they resurfaced.
