WWF welcomes emergency ban on harmful grazing weed

Today's decision by the Victorian government to ban the sale of the harmful weed bear-skin fescue (Festuca gautieri) - a known grazing and environmental weed that went on sale as a garden plant in late 2004 - is a welcome development in the fight against invasive species, says WWF, the conservation organisation.

"This action is the first time the government has used its emergency declaration powers under the Catchment and Land Protection Act, and so sets an important precedent for other invasive plants that have only recently been brought into Victoria but are yet to be widely distributed," said Andreas Glanznig, WWF's Senior Policy Adviser.

"It shows that Victoria is serious about acting early to nip these problems in the bud," he said.

Bear-skin fescue, a perennial tussock grass native to southwest France and northeast Spain, is not edible for grazing animals and ends up dominating grasslands in its range.

In the UK and US, the invasive plant has already jumped the garden fence and started to encroach on native vegetation.

The weed poses a risk to lowland temperate grasslands, one of Australia's most threatened native ecosystems - a good portion of which are found in Victoria.

WA has already banned the import of the weed, which also presents a risk to biodiversity in SA, NSW and TAS.

WWF has alerted the NSW, SA, and TAS governments of the weed risk posed by bear-skin fescue but they are yet to act.

Invasive garden plants are the major source of Australia's weeds and make up 70% of environmental and agricultural weeds. Australia's weed problem costs the government $4 billion a year.

Peach leaf curl isn't transmitted via scionwood. But it certainly could affect a new graft so would need spraying like any peach/nectarine. Viruses are the main concern. Plum pox virus is one example. It is widely present in Europe. So importing scion wood from another region could bring a virus with it. I've got viruses in my stone fruit. In fact a tree planted this year seems infected. So far it hasn't affected the fruit that I can tell but I am concerned and taking out some trees. I've never exchanged scionwood with anyone. So I'm not sure where it came from. Could be I was sold infected trees.

Passing the peace pipe to bboy and gardengal48. You both have worthy experience and advice to bring to the table, which we thoroughly appreciate. So no fights! Anyhow, HOSTA Virus X is fairly easy to spot in my experience, there are tale tell signs. Ink bleeding across leaf veins seems to be the best indicator (see pictures in my first post). Yes, environmental (cold/hot/physical damage) issues and even sporting (mutations) could throw one off thinking their plant might be infected - do your research - quarantine and watch the plant, considering testing if a prized plant, otherwise... don't take a chance, get rid of it. Nwnatural, to answer your question.... An infected hosta with HVX will languish and not perform well and some will most certainly die a very slow death. Not to mention how ugly and sickly the plant will look in comparison to a non-sick plant. Thanks for your interest! Azngrnthumbs, yes! please do speak up, whether it be The Home De-POT or Lowes, whatever nursery you happen to be browsing. Talk to the department supervisor if possible, they tend to be much more responsive. It takes a little bit of courage, but you're helping out the garden world. I've heard that Lowes has responded much better to customer complaints about HVX, they're supposed to be investigating their suppliers, much better than Home Depot response. Although, I still see many sickies at Lowes, sigh. Anyhow, awareness is the key, let the world know about this.

Plant your vegetables, at the appropriate time for your area of the world. If started seedlings put down a mulch material to aid in suppressing unwanted plant growth, aid in conserving soil moisture, aid in keeping the soil cooler, and (if the appropriate material is used) add organic matter to the soil. If sowing seeds wait until the plants are up and growing before mulching. That soil most likely has the seed of many of those "weeds" you removed and those seeds may well germinate so you will need to go back and remove them as they grow, just be careful to not also take out the plants you want.

Estrella - I like my living room to be the first thing visible from the front door...mainly because it is the one room in the house that I can usually keep picked up and looking good. As far as I'm concerned, a dining room that is used daily should be within just a few steps of the kitchen. Maximum distance? 10 feet maybe? I've never understood a house where you have to carry food through the great room and then down a hallway practically to the front door before you finally reach the dining room? Who wants to carry food halfway across the house and dirty dishes back halfway across the house? Just more chances for drips, spills, and broken dishes. I suppose if you only plan to use your formal dining room on very special occasions and also have a pretty serving cart that you can load all the food and dishes onto and then wheel it into the dining room, then I guess 25 or 30 feet would not be too much of a problem. Personally though, I'd rather not have to trek that far when I realize - usually right in the middle of Thanksgiving or Christmas Dinner - that I forgot to set the butter on the table. And of course, if one happens to have a cook plus a serving maid or butler, then who cares how far away the kitchen is from the dining room? It's the "help's" job to see that food gets to the table still warm and that nothing gets dropped/broken along the way. Don't I wish?!!! LOL!
