Wet soil - what tree?

I have an area that gets run-off. I can't improve the drainage. I want to plant a tree but I've already drowned a schinus molle and a native frangipani. Does anyone have any suggestions about what tree might survive there?

If you've got space, perhaps a willow!

Uhuh. I'll think about that. Was hoping to plant an evergreen, though. Thanks for the reply.

man its hard to see the slope sideways... or is it just me ... the pic is sideways for me ... i presume the rocks are on the high side??? and why do you presume it will stay damp.. if it is ON THE SLOPE ... or do you mean its at the bottom of the slope ... you havent lived there a whole year yet have you???? why do you think it will stay wet ... more facts please ... i am just wondering if you are making some faulty conclusions ... ken

my Chamaecyparis thyoides tend to be rather loose and sparse ... gorgeous in and of themselves... but not a screen as OP wants ... your description of your water situation is lacking... many plants can withstand a spring deluge .. or once in a while rainstorm accumulation ... its more a matter of how long the water stands there ... i would need to know soil type ... drainage ... time of year ... soil saturation other than the periodic spasm of too much water ... etc ... planting 'high' ... even just a foot can sometimes overcome the issue ... my favorite fall back for tall and thin is Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' .. once established.. they do about a foot per year ... i have one that is about 10 feet tall and 2 feet wide ... you must insure a single leader plant from youth ... and they should be rather cheap .. if you go small ... i even got some to root one time .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

link review the link ... especially the part about planting in clay soil .. once you have it committed to memory ... we can more fully discuss how and what you are thinking about doing .. most trees can adapt to almost anything ... but its our planting.. or transplanting... that ends up killing them ... so ... according to the link.. we plant high ... so the transplant has some air in the roots ... so that the plant can get itself ESTABLISHED ... and put it roots where it can cope with whatever is there ... i am sure there are specific trees which might not thrive .. but as the others note.. we have no real clue about where you are.. what the rest of the soil is ... nor zone.. so its not worth discussing such until we get more info ... ken ps: and do study the rest of the link.. as in .. no amending the hole .. proper watering.. mulching.. root flare.. etc ...

Size might be a restriction, but the following sites have some suggestions. Tree fern would be my "go" if it's shady but it would be slow-growing. Bottle-brush (callistemon) or melaleuca would be a good choice, some of the latter grow in very swampy conditions.

Thanks Alisonoz for the links. I actually have a melaleuca (broad leaved paperbark) in a rather dry spot where it's not doing too well. I'm inspired by this information to move it to the wet spot and see how it goes. I'll post the result.

Jassy01, some melaleucas are suitable to dry spots and some to moist, also moving many Aussie natives is risky; they hate root disturbance. I'd do a bit of research on the one you have before I attempted moving it.
