Hmmm. any idea of what the % concentration is for 3000 ppm--try that method while I'm rooting other things in a jerry-rigged mist propagator. I tried the air-layering method because I'd read that was the preferred method for propagating prunus for bonsai. The tree I tried it on was purchased from Wayside who used a grafting method--the rootstock is HORRIBLE--suckers repeatedly and the suckers have thorns. Thus, I wanted to see if I could get one on its own roots. I'd tried rooting cuttings of yoshino cherry without any luck, but that was before I fixed up the propagator, so maybe better luck this time.

An argument can be made that any ornamental prunus is worth consideration but even Dirr acknowledges that "Prunus as a group is beset with insect and disease problems and perhaps should not be looked upon as long term garden investments" and he goes on to say that some species can be expected to live for "30-50 years" - not a very long time in tree terms - while others "may decline in 3 to 10 years." He continues by stating that Prunus sargentii "is one of the most beautiful cherries in flower but does not appear to relish zone 7 and 8 heat" and is "not reliable in Minnesota".

If it doesn't "fit" in your garden and you can't return it, then find someone who does have the room and give it to them. This is really not something you want in a container long term. On a very temporary basis, sure, but growing a tree like this in a container indefinitely or on a permanent basis is fraught with complications. But the biggest drawback is that the tree will not be allowed to develop its very characteristic flat, wide spreading, almost tabletop habit. Combined with the white flowers, that is its most notable feature.
