San Mazarno Tomatoes

Has anyone heard of these tomatoes. Would they grow in Vic. When should they be planted. I have them in small pots at moment.How long before fruit.Do they need to be staked. Thanks.

I grow them here in Brisbane in the Winter they are a paste tomato very similar to Roma tomatoes.
You should be able to grow any tomato in Victoria.
From seed they take between 80-90 days here.
Yes they need to be staked or have some kind of support as they get heavy with fruit though not a tall plant.

San Marzano would grow well in Vic, give them plenty space and sunshine. THere are two varieties - San Marzano which is a heritage tomato and San Marzano Redorta which grows huge fruits. As mistymorn says, they will need staking. They are Excellent for making Italian tomato sauce, or paste but also nice eaten fresh. They hail from Tuscany, are meaty, and productive. Technically Indeterminate ( vining types ) regular leaf, Red plum.

Agree. it is a common practice and often discussed over on the Harvest Forum (the canning and preserving forum here) and on the Cooking forums. You'll also find discussions there on the higher quality and flavor of sauce that comes from using a mix of types rather than just paste-type tomatoes. The pre-cooking is your choice - some do it but most do not as there is no real benefit. I just freeze whole in ziplock bags, toss in a colander to thaw and let them drain well, then cook to desired consistency. Dave

They are getting root bound I'm sure. They need to be transplanted into good soil. They look too large to be in the small cups. Use good dirt and use some worm castings as fertilizer. My experience tomatoes need at least 10 gallons of dirt to thrive in a container.

" is it odd to get 2 seedlings?" - Yes, it is odd. I always grow my own Tomato starts and it never happened to me. Are you sure you didn't plant there a pair of seeds glued together? " should I transplant one seedling from each pot into separate pots now?" - I don't know what you "should" do. If I were you I would remove (cut) the weaker seedling. "when should I transfer these seedlings into larger pots" - When they are well rooted and the roots start to be prevented from further development by the size of the pot. And, first of all, be careful not to over-water.
