Aphids on Waterlily

My waterlily in my fishpond is alive with Aphids, any ideas on how to get rid of them?

If its potted and you can lift it out without polluting the water with mud AND if you are allowed to hose, just blast them off with a hose and repeat as necesary. Or water blast anyway and hopefully your fish (if you have fish) may clean them up.
If you have frogs or fish then you probably don't want to use chemicals, I would wait for the experts to come on board here with some possible friendly remedies

The experts are a worry Alison. I have a problem with the moth larvae eating my water lilies and I have been told all sorts of things to use and been assured it won't harm the fish. Here are some of the products recommended but no way would I use them.

Diazinon
White oil.

Anne,
Check with your local aquatic plant nursery for help but give the pet shops a miss. If your plant is potted you may be able to remove it to another container and treat the aphids until they are gone then clean any residual chemicals off and then replace it back in its pride of place.

I would be careful about water blasting the aphids as water lilies are subject to bruising. This will kill the affected stems so handle with care.

If you don't have fish it may not be a problem.

Stupid question time...Do you have to dechlorinate plant water???? I filled up a shallow bin sunday night and put them into it after I rinsed off the aphids with the hose.....sprayed a bit of the miracle grow in the bin from the sprayer. Monday morning they were slightly faded and the edges of the leaves were wrinkling back. I picked the remaining aphids off Monday evening and put them back in the pond. They look horible compared to when I took them out covered with aphids.. Could have the heavy rinsing from the hose really damaged them?

Buyorsell, it sounds like you have a lovely greenhouse. I put down crushed bluestone and, while I do like the way it packs, it was rough on my sometimes-bare feet, so last fall I pushed it to the perimeter, poured and leveled some sand and laid a walkway in the center, 3 blocks wide, of the gray rectangular patio blocks. Life is so much easier now, lol. Maybe something like this would work for you? Are you planning on adding any basic weather proofing this winter? I had great luck with a light dusting of ordinary flour on the aphids; come back about an hour or two later and they'll be all dried up; just spray plants with water to clean them off. Spider mites are a little more stubborn. There are several products on the market, from organic to the heavy-hitting synthetic chemicals, to keep them at bay. If your plants are all ornamentals, you may want to consider a systemic, which is applied to the soil and taken up by the plant and poisons the pests that feed upon it. Thanks El & Rigo! I can't sleep..see this is what happens when I dont work in the yard..full of energy at midnight.argh! Neighbors are fighting very loudly, & Now DH is out on OT so I def won't fall asleep. El, I Wish we had a place like that around here! I wanted to buy DD a couple venus fly traps, she's been wanting them for a few months, but HD wants $8 for a teeny tiny lil one. I remember when I bought mine ..o geez, I was gonna say a few yrs back, but its more than that.. More like 15 maybe 16, o lordy, lol..I only paid $2.99, if that. My cats ate them though. DH who was BF at the time bought me a bunch more, and the cats ate them again. So what did she get last Sunday instead? Mice...both the older kids got 2 mice each, I made them get females, and it turns out one of DD's is prego. greeaaaat!!! yes, that was sarcastic, lol. Venus Fly Traps woulda been cheaper. Rigo, I like that ponytail palm! I have been tempted to get one myself every time I see them at HD, but I know my cat and the puppy will destroy it. I've had a terrible time with the tiny black ants, they're soo small - I think they call them pavement ants. Some were getting in the house, which is soooo aggravating! I think their population thrive because we have a giant volunteer plum tree that drops huge amounts of sweet sticky plums. It rains sticky plums on my car too, it's so hard to get the dried on plums off the car's finish when the sun bakes them on. Not to mention all the fruit flies and smelly moldy plums. I tried to keep them picked up, but there are sooo many plums it just doesn't help. That tree is coming down next year!! The only thing that has worked for me is a product called TERO. I usually set the bait right near where I see a large number of ants them going into the ground. It's basically sugar water with borax, they take the sweet death syrup back to nest / queen before they die. I also found out where they were coming in the house and used expanding foam to fill the hole - that helped! It's worked well, and the population has been greatly reduced. I've had to keep reapplying the TERO bait over and over to keep them at bay.
