sick elkhorn plant with brown spotting on leaves
Comments (10)There are distinct plants which are Elkhorn Ferns (Platycerium bifurcatum) and Staghorn Ferns (Platycerium superbum). Unfortunately the names are too often confused and even nurseries get it mixed up. They have similar growing conditions and people who don't know just use the names interchangeably. Because they are native locally (though not exactly where I live) differentiating is a bit more important. In foreign countries the Elkhorn is the most common. In fact I haven't seen any (accurate) reference to Staghorns on foreign garden web sites. I've dug out some of my photos which will show you the difference. This Elkhorn (Platycerium bifurcatum) is in habitat. The photo's of a small plant, they do get a lot bigger. It's a "colony" of many plants in fact, they multiply and grow in a cluster. You can divide the clusters/colonies and get more separate plants....See MoreMy ZZ plant has a few spots and some black areas
Comments (2)With ZZ plants, I've noticed there are often two types of new growth. Some come out a very small spike that is very thin and only ever gets about 5" tall and only grows a few leaves. They tend to die off. The other new growth comes up from the soil approximately the width of a pencil or more. Those ones grow tall and unfurl slowly with many leaves. I don't quite know why the ZZ does this. But the small spindly growth may die. I just cut them off after all the leaves turn brown. The pot I see you have looks just like the cache pots they sell at Ikea that have no drain hole. Does your pot have a drain hole? If not, you will want to repot into one that does. ZZ will not be happy in a pot without drainage....See MoreLight spots on ficus plants and soil colour went from brown to black
Comments (6)Very common in ficus and some other plants too. They are called cystolith - deposit of calcium carbonate. They appear in one or two neat rows near the edge of the leaf. Nothing to worry about. On the other hand, you soil looks too wet. You need to either use a much better draining mix or control your watering habits. Ficus and many other plants would prefer to be on the drier side most of the time....See Moreblack spot growing on my rubber plant leaves
