I've got an unheated greenhouse which I use mainly for overwintering frost-tender plants. Nothing fancy, just a tent-like structure which keeps the frost out.

I've got chillies and capsicum plants in pots in there. This will give me a bit of a head start on these plants as our season usually is a bit too short for them to ripen up by the first frost.

I took quite a few cuttings of tomatoes in autumn and they are doing well. A bit too well, maybe. As some of them are now starting to flower. What shall I do? It's still a bit early, I think. Shall I nip off the flowers? Or let them do their thing and see what happens?

This is the first winter that I've got tomato cuttings in pots. I just wanted to see what happens. I am really surprised how well they are doing.

Any advice more than welcome. :)

Ciao Spatz. Is it going to be warm enough in there - and will there be enough sun - for the toms to develop in any meaningful way?

Hey Spatz- I am remembering your picture from last year with the basket of late season goodies. I was blown away! Are you offerring seeds? I got some from Petrina last year and as I'm a person without soil of my own- you know, you're not just giving them to me- I give seedlings to my friends and relatives all over Sydney. I'm looking for the really great tasting ones this year and perhaps some early and late season planters?

Lucy it's not just the GH's that you build yourself that require the modifications. Pretty much all the lower priced ones (say under $2000 for a 10 x 12) that need them. A really good GH that size right out of the box (so to speak) starts around $4000 but with modifications you can make the cheaper ones just as good. Unless you have a company build it for you you are going to have to put it together. I guess you could find one prefab and have it delivered intact but that would probably cost an arm and a leg. The small pop ups don't really require much assembly but even the hoop houses take a few hours to put up. Here's the modifications that the HFGH required and it's pretty similar to all the other lower priced GH's that size though I'd hope that not all had instructions as screwed up as HF. You might want to see if they still have any available unless you are going to invest in a really good one because they were dirt cheap. Granted the modifications doubled the cost but it was still a lot less then comparable GH's. Here is a link that might be useful: modifications for the HFGH

azee_2009 I'm not sure how many tomato plants you plan, but placing a fan underneath each one seems unreasonable to me for various reasons. For just a couple of plants shaking them daily, or using a electric toothbrush on the back of the flower clusters typically work well. For more plants or people that don't want to do the labor, placing a few oscillating fans around the room works great. The fan direction isn't important, air circulation is. For the truly lazy, the oscillating fans can be on timers. But typically are set to run 24/7. The constant air circulation helps prevent fungal disease as well (especially in humid greenhouse conditions).

I agree with Digdirt and Veggiecanner. Take your pick, both make logical sense. I hardly ever remove blossoms on larger plants except to thin out the huge misshaped double flowers on a few heirlooms. I propagated a few hundred suckers this spring a those plants almost always send out flowers at or near soil level which I'll always pinch off. Keep in mind that early flowers will be your first harvest. I figure it never sets the plant back much to make one or two early fruits for my enjoyment. I often go one step further and spritz the first clusters with "blossom set" spray to insure a few early fruit. Judge your actions based on overall plant condition and your personal motives. You won't want to save seed from those initial fruits anyhow so don't worry about cross pollination.

ML What a wonderful collection of pretty spaces. I KNOW which one LL will love. Oldgardener that is a delightful little shed? Shed is that really enough of a name for such a pretty little building. My DH built me the garden shed from satellite dish fins and some recycled tin. Not a thing of beauty but is really is useful. Since the french doors our friend brought up will not fit where we had hoped I am going to try to use them some how on the front porch. First I need to get them to the porch. They will take two men and a woman to lift them. EEEEKKK they are heavy. I do not plan on officially mounting them . Just have them temp until I can talk DH into enclosing half or so of the porch. I really hope to do that some day. THEN we can use the collected windows and doors I have been hoarding.

Finbar, good questions. I'm not sure it'll be warm enough consistently in the greenhouse. They will develop - but very, very slowly. I've just picked an Anna Russian which took until now to develop on the plant. I'm surprised it did develop at all and it ripened up. I'm sure it won't have that much taste, but will find out today or tomorrow.

So, I guess I'll let them flower if they like. :)

Flowr, I posted a list of tomato seeds on this forum a while ago. I think DerbyTas started the thread. Have a look if you find a tomato or two that you'd like to have seeds of and send me an email.

hey, spatz, sounds like a real dilemma. If they're flowering, wouldn't they know what time it is?. Do they have growing logic or something?.

Adam, you'd think they know what time of the year it is, wouldn't you. Anyway, they were just an experiment so I'll let them grow as they like. See what happens. :)

And the taste of the Anna Russian? BLAH! Exactly the same as store bought ones. Will not eat the next ones but save seeds. :)
