I baught 8 small salvia splendens plants from a supermarket today ( I know, stupid to buy plants from supermarkets, but it was their first morning on the shelf. I saw them being put out and impulse baught). they were already trying to flower but I took the flowering parts off because they were so small. I want them to grow bigger first and they had tiny new leaves growing too. did I do the right thing? I'm only 16 and I don't know a lot about gardening yet. my grandma used to grow these in her garden. they were my fave when I was little.

Before you try an experimental cutting, check to see if the variegation persists. The irregular pattern indicates a viral cause, and it must carry through to new foliage, not just on the parent stem, but to axillary growth, which is what you should take as cutting stock. Most viral variegation disappears fairly quickly. I just witnessed a case of this variegation myself on a stock plant of Salvia puberula Yucca-Do form, but it did not persist. On the other hand, the irregularly variegated leaves of S. splendens vanhouttei Dancing Flames are stable. I haven't seen a reversion yet, and would like to see if seedlings revert. One reason Salvia leucantha Eder does not sell well is that one of about 20 axillary shoots reverts, and since this reversion is more robust, it takes over. To succeed with Eder calls for at least weekly vigilance to cut off reverted growth. Variegation that is similar from leaf to leaf is more valuable, since they are genetic, or perhaps epigenetic in origin and are more stable.

Hey ... I have some seeds of Red Texas Salvia (coccinea) as well as Cleveland Sage (salvia clevlandii) ... they are several years old at least however, so I'm not sure what germination would be like, but they have been kept/stored well in a cool, dark and dry place. I'm not sure if you're interested in trying them ... I've been saving them to grow myself lol and this will be the summer, but I do have extras I can spare. If you are interested, just let me know :)
