I have grown it in full sun and it did well for about three years until whomped by frost and possibly drought as well (a very dry winter). It was a plant that I bought in Brisbane, so was obviously not well adapted to the climate here in Toowoomba. In retrospect I shouldn't have bothered with it.
I have a number of others coming on, grown from inland seed, which I expect to do better. The local variety (yellow flowers) does tolerate a large amount of sun where it grows in the bush, though the roots and the lower parts of the plant are often shaded by low growth.
I think your chances of a successful transplant are good.
Did you know that these plants have separate-sexed plants? Both flower prettily, but if you want the showy seedheads you need a female, and some male plants nearby for fertilisation. It's one of those plants we shouldn't ever really plant just one of - and because it's only ever a rather light vine, there is usually room for 3 or 4 plants on a trellis or whatever.
The other thing about clematis is that it only flowers on new wood, so should be cut back by a third every summer.

Thank you Trish, for some reason I never got back to check for resposes. I thought it (C. Glycinoides) might have done well in Toowoomba, I hope to take meself and wife for a drive up there this September (or October - avoid the garden viewing crowds). I've wondered whether it was a new or old-wood flowerer, so I'll take notice of your advice. This spring I want to plant one on each side of the archway and last May dug up my one plant and after a check of the roots found I could devide it, so I did. One has produced an upshoot from below the soil (pot) level, the other has done nothing but still doesn't look dead. It's been a cool winter here, just west of Tweed Heads, so I'm hoping the other might still prove ok.

Trich_g if you get back to this page, I was successful with my two potting ups of C glycinoides and also managed to strike one from a dozen or so cuttings I took when I dug the plant up and divided it. The cutting is still in a pot with 2 new leaves which popped up and then stopped, as clematis sometimes do, they just stop for awhile. I built a new garden arch and planted the c. gly. both sides in amongst 2 - also one ech side - of the viticella, clematis venosa violacea. The glycinoides has put out new shoots and the violacea has shot up and is in bud.
