Canary bird.

Well, it's been raining all day and I can't go out and weed or kill off aphids or blackspot so, apart from spending time in my worshop building a 'rose-arch' what else is there to do after you read the Sunday paper and do the crossword on a very wet Sunday? So I decided I'd post a picture of another old rose. This one is 'Canary Bird', Botannica's Pocket Roses book says it was found growing in England around 1907 and is believed to be a cross between "Rosa Hugonsis and R. Xanthina. The pic. shows the unusual red stems, small disease resistant leaves and red thorns. Apparently it resents cutting back other than a mere tidy up - the stems can be large and are arching, so plenty of room is recommended. I've recently transplanted it, along with others, to the end of the (garden) bed. By the way, the shiny leaved smaller rose to it's right is one from Swains (in Sydney) called 'The Fairy', a lovely tough little pink.
