Pruning Pale Pink Flowering Diosma

Hi there, I am an L plate gardener and need some advice. I have a diosma that is around 20 or so years old and has grown into a big bush around 2m in width and about 1.5 m high with lots of lush green tips about 10cm long. I really want to prune it back hard as it is shading some other plants and is a little too big for the space it is in. Will pruning if back by 1/3rd or more kill it or affect it unduly? I normally just prune off the tips to keep the ends lush and it seems to like this. Any advice would be welcome.

hi annette, they can handle a hard pruning but you will lose a lot of that lush green outer growth so it wont be pretty where youve pruned it back hard, but in time it will fill out again and green up. I thought Id just mention that diosma arent actually a native (although a lot of people confuse them for natives) but they come from south africa :)

Some years ago I had a standard Diosma which was covered in pink flowers every winter/spring. I had to remove that one and I bought another one which I put in a different spot. I have had it three or four years and it barely flowers at all. Any suggestions, please

If the rose in question only gets to be 4' tall, I doubt it could be Dainty Bess. Mine is pushing 7' right now, after being pruned to 2' this spring. Climbing Dainty Bess, once established, will easily shoot up a 10 - 12' cane. I don't know if the original poster has checked in here, but I think with a height of 4', with continuous flowering and clusters like the photo, he/she should look at Floribundas. The one that is the best match to my eye is Poulsen's Pearl ... though I expect there were probably other pink singles introduced that I am not familiar with. With an introduction date of 1949, this puts Poulsen's Pearl right at the end of the period in which the original rose was planted. The other possibility is that the original rose started as 'Isobel', and it sported light pink at some time in its history. Yellow and pinks are more or less complementary colours. It is a classic combination in colour designs. However, it also depends on the hues of colours. A hot lipstick pink may not look great beside a faded creamy yellow for example. In the end, it really depends on what kind of effect you are trying to achieve. I don't really care about clashing colours myself because in the natural world, all colours are mixed together not segregated. But for those folks who wants the "designer" looks, it is another story. The general rule with regard to colours in gardening is that soft colours especially blue and pink tones colours will appear further away as opposed to hot fiery colours. This "rule" may be important for someone who has a small garden. If you want your garden to appear larger than they are, you may want to plant all the soft blue tones flowers in the back and the red fiery to the front as the eyes will detect the fiery colours first. It will trick the eye that the garden is much larger than it is.
