pomegranate seed info needed

Hi Folks, I am back from a lovely trip to China.I have been given two ripe pomegranates by a neighbour and would like to strike the seeds.Can anyone tell me how? Do they need any special treatment? They are coated in a red juicy jelly so I am worried they may go mouldy.

Just remove the juicy pulp from the seeds (best way is to pop them in your mouth and enjoy the taste sensation), then rinse them clean. Sow them when the weather warms up a bit either where you want them to grow or in tree tubes. They dislike having their roots disturbed so tree tubes are ideal. They can be slow to germinate so be patient. Either way, don't let the ground or potting mix dry out too much until they've sprouted. If you want to sow them now place an empty softdrink bottle over them to keep them warm.
I'll be sowing my seeds in September as it's too cold here just yet.

hi, I get little trees popping up from my tree in the yard and it just amazes me how they come up in dry sandy hot spots. I have potted little seedlings up and one thing they dont like is too much water, even when theyre small (they start dropping their leaves) so be careful not to spoil them.

totally true! try and get them planted out as soon as theyre big enough to handle, they do have a tap root and Ive found them so sensitive to transplant death like no other plant, be very gentle with them when you transplant.

Unless you only want it as ornamental, I would not recomend it. they do not come true to type and are usually inferior. I have had 3 come up volunteer around my place and all 3 were terrible fruit that was never eatable. Best way to grow a good one is from cuttings or just buy a bare root. Cuttings should be cut while dormant, and planted when it's warm enough for things to get growing in your area. Good luck softmentor

One of the yards in the neighborhood has a big pomegranate tree with plenty of fruit. But the fruit always seems unripe no matter when I come by. Several times I have picked a pomegranate to taste. I try to find the biggest reddest one, but most of them seem a little undersized, and none of them are fully red colored. The arils inside the fruit are only half splotched with red blush, they are more clear dingy amber brown colored. They do not taste sweet, and chewing them in my mouth, it feels like the arils have less flesh and more seed, not very edible. I suspect someone tried to grow a pomegranate tree from seed, and now there is a nice tree but one that produces not-so-edible fruit.

Cool, I plan on using my plants as Bonsai specimens, which is why I'm not worried about the fruit, and will probably keep them in 60 % shade, maybe add a little more light if it requires it but not much. I am excited one of my seedlings came up last night and another one has its radical sticking out. Those are from the ones I used the baggie and vermiculite method of germinating. Moved it 2inch square pot the kind that is around 3-3 1/2 inches deep. I also have several in a 6 cell plug tray sitting next to some Schinus molles seeds I sowed. I can't wait for the next 30-90 days I have crape (crepe) Myrtle, ash, acer palmatum, some other type of acer, and some acorns and tilia cordata seeds stratifying in the frige right now. First year I had enough forethought to collect my seeds and get them stratified for the following season, hopfully in a few years I will have several nice pieces to work with. thanks for info about pomegranate.

Thanks for the hints..I have planted seeds on location and will also put some into pots as I feel I can't have too many .I have five acres to fill! Thanks again for the help.
