smauk43, I got the same ice storm you got. Those types of ice storms are extremely rare, and in those types of ice storms, it doesn't matter the tree. EVERYTHING took major damage. Pick your oak, it went down. Pick your maple, it went down. Pick anything you like, if it grows here, it went down in very large numbers. While some species were absolutely destroyed (birches and willows), I know many many "resistant to ice storms" tree reduced to trunks or worse, and almost all took some amount of significant to major damage. While others that some people on here swear as basically waiting to fall over, like Autumn Blaze, suffered relatively little damage. I see it with my own eyes, and yes I'm sure that is exactly what they are. Point being, is not to let this ice storm make you believe that every ice storm will be that way. So if you like something that normally survives just fine, but did not in that storm, don't let it stop you. Odds are you are not going to get the same thing for some time. Still you need something that will grow vigorously. The tulip tree is a good start. But allot depends on how big a tree you want, and any other characteristic. Larger Size Trees: Sycamore Tulip Tree Plane Tree Seedless Honey Locust maybe (not sure of the growth rate) Red Maple cultivars Catalpa Purple Robie Locust (spelling?) Bald Cypress Dawn's Redwood Various other conifers Various elms Zelkova's Med Size Trees: Shantung Maple (very tough tree, fast growing, and hard wood) Chinese Pistache Norwegian Sunset Maple Pacific Sunset Maple Oklahoma Redbud Smoke Tree Crepe Myrtle (Tree Form) Amur Maple Trident Maple (not sure of growth rate) Many other medium size rarer maples These are a few that comes to mind. Also if I recall correctly, Yellowwood tends to have brittle wood, and prone to breakage. Also if I remember correctly, is not fast growing, or so thats literature says. Hope something here helps. well ... i took a walk out there in the rain ... so no camera ... the leader is extending.. as much as any other terminal bud ... of which, i swear.. every bud on the tree has 3 or 4 tiny cones.... this thing is going to go crazy ... is resinosa used as understock for anything .... ??? now the real test will come.. when the weight above.. either collapses the bamboo ... or it all hardens off and away it goes ... ken

Kadasuki - What kind of trees have you lost so far? We cut down a silver maple in our back yard after our big ice storm here two years ago. It might have lived but it looked pretty bad. We cut down an Autumn Blaze(I think) maple in our front yard that had extensive damage but kept another, same kind of maple, that wasn't quite as bad. We had two London Plane trees that had only a few broken limbs. We cut down one while we had people here to help us because it was planted in a bad spot and kept the other. We kept a tulip tree that still looks pretty awful and probably should've been cut down. My parents have one about the same age that had heavy damage but has recovered nicely. Their hard maples looked horrid but they kept them. They're not recovering well at all. Still have no tops and a really weird shape. We have a pin oak in our front yard that did pretty well. It had the very top broken off but it looked good compared to some of our other trees. They don't tolerate limey soil very well if you have that. The worst thing about them is the way the limbs continually grow down. It makes them hard to mow under. You would need to make sure it's not too close to any buildings because it's hard to keep the limbs trimmed up away from the roof. We had a red mulberry that had nothing left but part of the trunk and we had to have it taken out. It surprised me how badly some of the oak trees did around here. Some that were very old that lost huge limbs. I think you're smart to drive around to see what looks the worst and also try to note which trees regain their shape after being damaged.
