Agapanthus Flower Stems - Collapsing Half Way Up

I've got a large bed of agapanthus that have flowered beautifully for years now every summer. This year the bed (which has excellent drainage) has flowered a month late and a significant number of the flowers are 'collapsing' about two thirds of the way up the stem. Where the stem collapses turns brown and eventually everything above it dies off. We've had an unusually wet spring and summer in Tasmanian this year and initially I thought that might be the cause ... but people down the road don't seem to have the same problem. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
