Amarillid plants are my favorite subjects and my heart-pulse (sorry for inadequate terminology *lol*) I shall write you privately. so - back to the topic in spe *g* I found it to be conspicuous and characteristc of amaryllid plants (and, more generally - MANY bulbous plants, respectively) - that these can be regarded as herd animals *ROFL* (but by all means with a serious thought) and being most attractive when displayed in mass plantings. These amaryllogene white powder tassels do not make any exception to that rule. They are simply wonderfull in a dense mass planting and when blooming simultaneusly, as can instantly concluded from several of the thumbnail images in the link I gave above. Hans-Werner

I know this posting was months ago,but I will give it a go. What would the soil be like in the area you are thinking of ? What is the aspect - n,s,e or w ? What area of Australia are in you, tropics, warm temperate etc ? If you want a low maintenance, flowering shrub, you can't really go past lilly pillyies. Lots of them to consider at your local nursery. You might want a line of them along the fence. You could underplant them with some cliveas, or mondo grass. These are all low maint plants. Tallish tree, you could consider Blueberry ash. You might have already finished the garden by now ! Regards

My first thought were crinums - spider lily, though they do tend to go briefly dormant in late winter/early spring before they flower - and the flowers are a bonus. I also thought of Neomarica (walking iris) - the white or yellow forms, which are smaller - though probably would not withstand full sun. Or Curculigo capitulata - also just depending on what aspect there is in your intended spot.

Best if you make the beds raised up put lots of compost in and Gypsum to break up that clay preparation is the key to everything. How about the succulent type ground covers not sure if they grow in acidic soil though. You can sweeten up acidic soils by adding lime don't know what it will do to your pine trees. Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, like soil that is acidic but not clay soil. Mesembranthemum they come in so many colours also white, pinks So do the Kalanchoe and flower for many months. What about Chamaescilla mine are in the shade and flower for ages, they multiply fast. My Verbena Coral Pink ground cover loves the shade. Get yourself a packet of Nasturtium seeds they come up year after year.. All the ground covers I have grown from cuttings. Hope this helps a little.. Mary-Anne
