Could this be an amaryillis?

I have a "pass along" bulb plant with very long leathery/succulent leaves that are very rounded at the ends and have very fine hairs rimming the edges. Top set of leaves are 14 inches long and 4 1/4" wide (middle of leaves). Leaves grow fan shaped and there is a second set underneath. There is also an offset growing from the base. Roots appear to be a thick fleshy type.

Thought this could be some clivea hybrid too but this has a definate bulb. Sister obtained this plant in a fall swap (no ID) and I got it in December. So far there is no sign of a flower stalk. If anybody has a clue I would be grateful so I can provide proper growing conditions for it. Guessing that it's at least tropical. Leaves could be evergreen as there is no sign of yellowing. Thanks for any input! PS I can email picture if needed.

Thank you Hans! After looking at all the pictures on the net of Haemanthus, the albiflos seems to match what I have the best. The leaves on mine do seem to be much longer and rounder and the hairs on the edges are very sparse and fine. It will be interesting to see what quality of flower it will put out eventually. Looks like I'll have to wait until summer to see it bloom. Does anyone out there also have this plant? Perhaps I should move over to the bulb forum..

Soultan, You are a HOOT! Indeed! When I received the small piece of plant from my Mom, she told me it was an umbrella palm. I had no clue other than that as to the name of the plant. Then, there was a disabled person in NC that wrote me and told me the actual name. I lost my hard drive and lost those emails, and I hated it that I did not record the name somewhere. I believe it is actually 'Cyperus involucratus'. Every winter, it is a chore to cut the deciduous branches and haul them to the back of the acre to be burned. The 'bed' has gotten too large. I have removed some and given them to friends, but it is quite a chore because the roots are like ginger roots, only bigger and thicker. You really need strong arms and an axe to cut off sections. I must do that this year because they are taking over other plants in the area. Oh! I learned at Master Gardener training about growing the seeds by placing them upside down in water, but I never tried that because they multiply so well on their own. Cindee, I have the gigantic version of yours in a huge pot in my greenhouse. Next year, I plan to try to move it to my gardens. It is so much more delicate. I had a miniature one, but I lost it. One day, I will get another... They are all very fascinating!

Are you buying it for the container, or for the bulb? That looks like the Smith and Hawken kit from Target. I bought one this January when they were 90% off, mainly because I wanted the ceramic cachepot. If what you really want is a nice, fat bulb that is true to label and will give you more than one stem of flowers, then look for a source that sells bare bulbs and buy the pot separately. Last year's bulbs were loose in the pots and on the small side, typical for box kits. I was able to select one that had not bloomed. I got a mislabeled bulb that only put up one scape, but I consider the bulb a free bonus at the price I paid. With the bulb in an opaque sealed bag, at full price, I would pass. There could be a nasty surprise in there. If you do buy one, you will need a second pot with drain holes to plant the bulb in. Use the ceramic pot as a saucer and empty it after every watering.

Are there scapes growing!? If so, wait until the bulbs have bloomed to attempt this? If not... Proceed with caution! I'd be tempted to carefully unpot and get rid of the spider plant. Put the SP in a hanging basket and then look at the amaryllis. You could determine if you have a mother bulb and offsets or maybe 4 separate bulbs. After time my bulbs pull themselves down a it, but these necks look a little close to the soil's surface to me. Since they are actively growing and won't be dormant for another year, you could clear some soil off the surface, and add fresh material to the bottom if the pot. Just make sure there's good drainage! Enjoy your nice gift! K

That sounds beautiful, LizaLily. As cut flowers, amaryllis would be beautiful. As plants, well, they just have too much stem. Putting the bloom over the lip of your vase seems much more "together" without the long stem. Thanks for sharing your idea. What's the vase life of amaryllis?

Amarillid plants are my favorite subjects and my heart-pulse (sorry for inadequate terminology *lol*)

I shall write you privately.

so - back to the topic in spe *g* I found it to be conspicuous and characteristc of amaryllid plants (and, more generally - MANY bulbous plants, respectively) - that these can be regarded as herd animals *ROFL* (but by all means with a serious thought) and being most attractive when displayed in mass plantings.

These amaryllogene white powder tassels do not make any exception to that rule. They are simply wonderfull in a dense mass planting and when blooming simultaneusly, as can instantly concluded from several of the thumbnail images in the link I gave above.

I was searching through agapanthus files as well. Just didn't go deep enough in the amaryllis family. You saved me from an obsessive search Hans-Werner! Since I live in a wet and cool climate, these interesting amarillids may have to stay pot bound. Maybe I can post pictures in the months ahead if I'm lucky with blooms. Thanks again for your expertise!

Is it the same kind of amaryllid that has a variety called King Alfred something? There was another post with it's picture. It was a purple colored variety, but it looked very much like this.

Yes, the cross of H. albiflos and H. coccineus give the hybrid H. 'King Albert' that I posted previously! For me, they are much more exotic than Amaryllis, but as I've said before, that is what makes these bulbs fun.....something for everyone :o) Dan

Okay. Then I was not entirely wrong. It is quite an interesting looking flower. I like it for some reason. Maybe it is because I misread its name and I thought it was King Alfred. :o)
