Blatent mistake....

OMG! I am reading Heidi's Alp and enjoying it thoroughly. Until I turn to page 44 and we are in Legoland. ........."Over all looms an enormous grey lego model of the sculpted presidential heads of Mount Rushton, the American Mount Olympus."

Ok, she's from Oxford, England, but I'm from England too, and I know there's no Mount Ruston,....is there?!?

No, its Rushmore. And I cut authors lots of slack for mistakes in text. Editors are supposed to catch things like that, but it seems like I am seeing more and more mistakes like that.

And if the mistake is small and I love the book, its likely I wouldn't notice it anyway.

Okay, Jonathan, now that I have vented my spleen, I will play nicely again. :) Regarding imprinting, here's how I see it... and others are welcome to disagree. Goslings have an instinctive tendency to attach themselves to the first creature(s) they see. In ideal circumstances, this is good old momma goose. They follow her and look to her for protection, guidance etc. She teaches them and if they get out of line, she corrects them - very firmly. One of the things the parent geese seem to teach their young is that humans should be kept at a little distance. "They may be nice creatures, little goslings, but they are NOT GEESE." :) Incubator goslings, or goslings removed from their parent just after hatching, have no mother goose to imprint on. Instead they have this human who feeds, waters, protects etc. So they attach themselves to this human. If the human responds by treating a gosling with all the handling and affection that one would accord to a puppy or kitten, the gosling grows up with no natural boundaries between it and the human. Some people feel such a goose lacks respect for humans. I'm not sure this is exactly the right word... but it's close. It certainly lacks inhibitions regarding its behaviour toward the human. When breeding season rolls around, along about the following February, the geese - and particularly the ganders - are suddenly flooded with hormonal urges. If the gander lacks the inhibitions that would normally keep him at a safe distance from human "intruders" he MAY vent his over-protectiveness and possessiveness of his lady by attacking the very humans who nurtured him -- or any others that venture too near. A goose-raised gander may normally hiss and snake his neck to warn people to keep away while he and his lady raise their young, but a hand-raised gander is more likely to go further than that, and bite and/or flog the human with his wings. It hurts plenty... and if this happened to a small child, serious damage could be done. This being said, goose behaviour even during the breeding season is influenced by the underlying disposition of the individual bird. And this inborn disposition MAY be affected by genetics. Hence one breed gets good reviews (particularly Pilgrims and American Buffs) whereas certain others (particularly the Asian breeds which are not descended from the European greylag) have a reputation for aggressiveness. Certain breeds, and the Pilgrim is one of them, have been selectively bred for good dispositions, making it less likely that they will be aggressive as they mature. In addition to this, Pilgrims are auto-sexing and even a beginner can tell the males from the females at a glance. This makes it much easier to be more reserved in one's handling of the ganders in particular. Last year, when I added a pair of Pilgrim goslings to the mixed breed family my two geese were raising, I took pains not to handfeed or pet the gander gosling. He was naturally reserved and I encouraged him to stay that way. I think the only time we picked him up or even touched him was once when we saw blood on his feathers and needed to check the extent of the injury. The female gosling was more friendly and when we had the geese out in the pasture for extra grazing she soon followed her foster mother's example and learned to take dandelion greens from my hand. I don't do this a lot with her; but Willow, (my first Pilgrim who was of necessity hand-raised) comes looking for attention from time to time. She is a sweetheart even during breeding season and Elsie follows her example. I do believe that one has more leeway with female geese than one has with ganders, but even Willow does not appreciate me handling her goslings when they are small. (And I respect this, except when necessary to return a gosling that has squeezed under the fence or otherwise needs rescuing. Even then Willow can be quite huffy about it... but not aggressive.) Get me talking about my geese and I can go on and on... but I think that is enough to add at the moment. Please understand that these are subjective observations from a person who has just over two years experience with geese and that the sample of geese I have worked with has been a mere dozen. What I am doing with my geese now is working well for me and for the geese. They are friendly, but not lap geese. They are always glad to see us and give us a loud, joyous welcome; they know their names and will come when called (if they feel like it). Willow, with her winning ways and extremely sweet nature, is ALMOST a pet. The other two are not. But all of them enrich our lives, make us smile or shake our heads at their antics, and are altogether very satisfactory creatures to have about the place.

I've been using my first and middle names for something like 14 years. I found it's easiest to just be me and helps people remember who I am better. Maybe I'm getting old but I have a hard time keeping the association between user name and real name straight. I do dog rescue and people need to be able to remember who I am. As for the comment about not hiding that is very true. They just did a study recently and found that if people felt they could hide behind a username they were more outspoken if not downright cruel than if they used their own name. It doesn't happen here, but I see it in far too many other forums. This forum is like a garden -- a safe haven where names show interests and loves and are not cloaks of anonymity. I always do color (and texture, and shapes...) schemes in my -and others- garden. And no colour is out of my palette,even bright and vibrant yellows, reds and oranges. Contrasts should be important too, because pale colour schemes, and especially one-only colour schemes, are prone to become boring and featurless if not really well composed. By the way, color can be important when you have limited space available, and many Roses to grow togheter :o)) - right color combinations are able to enhance the beauty of each rose and set off their puculiar qualities at the best. I do love especially to put togheter two climbing or rambling roses, both in color blend or in contrast: for instance, I have 'Belle Portugaise' and 'Clg. Cramoisi SupÃÂ©rieur' on an Olive tree, 'Purezza' with 'Cooper Burmese' (same color, very different shape) on the working shed roof A blend of 'Lamarque' and 'Jaune Desprez' in early October at the edge of the "white and blue" garden Just a few more pictures on the subject 'Le VÃÂ©suve' and 'Archiduc Joseph/Monsieur Tillier', this is a part of a larger and complex color scheme with grey and purple leaved plants, salmon, pale orange / coppery tones, and a few bright pink spots. It's like everything else in life: moderation is the key. A little bit of "pressure" can make a person think and end in a much better kitchen (as it did in my case). Too much encouragement, ie "do whatever you are inclined to. It will be fabulous" doesn't offer advice to reflect on, nor does it present other options. But I think the underlaying foundation should always be concern and an attitude of caring, not judgement, and that was always one of the very special things about this forum, but I think a tad of meanness has been introduced in recent months. I read a comment the other day and did a triple take - certaintly she could not have actually meant that!! It was an outright insult about another's choice and blatent attack on the person's creativity. The next poster said as much and suggested ignoring and hopefully that is what happened. Internet forums in general are notoriously outrageously cruel. This one never was and we need to be on guard against that. I remember a day when even the finished kitchens that were far, far less than the dream kitchens we see here were posted, there was an abundance of comments, all of which were positive. There is *something* to appreciate about every kitchen. They seemed to get as many oooohs and aaahs as the really spectacular ones. I was almost blown over by that aspect when I first joined in 08. I thought, "how could strangers really be that caring and considerate and encouraging toward someone they don't really even know? Because that kitchen is nice, but they are over the top with their enthusiasm and support of it!" That was special and rare and made EVERYONE feel included, regardless of what type of kitchen they did or what kind of budget they were on. But now it seems like the swooning is reserved for only the kitchens that comply to the group standard, and that affects the flavor of the forum. I think it also makes the people who don't or can't comply to the standard feel bullied. If we value people and the special characteristics of this forum, we should make an effort to make all kitchen renovators feel really good about their kitchen. If nothing else, we can appreciate all the effort and planning that went into it!

Ha! I wasn't going to point it out but .......... it seems martin_z wasn't as strong. ;-)

Anyway, talking about mistakes, I remember reading a Sherlock Holmes story when I was in my early teens and it had, what I thought then, to be a major head scratcher. Basically, the passage that mentioned that it was around 9 pm and that the sun was still high in the sky.

Now, you have to realize that I was about 13 or so and had NEVER left my home country which was quite close to the equator. So, the sun set pretty regularly at around 6 pm regardless of the time of year. Thus, this passage about the sun being high in the sky at 9 pm when it was quite clear that the sun SHOULD have set 3 hours before was ....... puzzling.

Then, a few years later, I moved to Los Angeles and I remember sitting down to dinner at 8:30 pm and having the sun squarely in my eyes .....

It's amazing how experience changes one's perspective. ;-)

"Ruston" may well have been the writer's fault but I am a professional writer in a non-fiction field and I can't tell you how many times my spelling and, worse, facts have been changed from right to wrong by editors/copy editors. There is nothing that drives me crazier. The dismal errors go into history with my name on them. And I border on obsessive-compulsive about my research. So when I encounter this type of error, I always remember that it is possible that it was some miscreant of an editor who is the responsible party.

My BLATANT mistake is so BLATANT now that I can't bear to browse the board. It may as well be in neon! I had to make the mistake in the HEADING so it gets repeated and repeated and repeated and.........!
I will go into seclusion and hope that everyone loses interest very soon! I'll be back in a few weeks!

Frankly, I'm more dismayed by the reference to Mt. Rushmore as the American Mount Olympus. It is a tourist attraction, and while I guess some people think we worship the almighty dollar, I'd give the commercial Mount Olympus to the Matterhorn at Disneyland.

Personally, I think God's Country lies in the East Tennessee Hills, and yes, I'll grant it stretches over into North Carolina a ways.

But in all seriousness, I'd say our Mount Olympus is Mt. Shasta. What say you all?

cece, I was so looking forward to a feast of nectar and ambrosia that I looked up Potter County PA for an eg of the fine-dining offered therin and came up with the site below. I don't know if you live in or near Coudersport but perhaps you can explain a couple of items on the menu.

a. What is double-baked potato soup?

b What do they mean by 'tossed salad with veggies'?

c. Is the chef/cook from Scotland? I notice a great many 'fried' dishes. :-)

I don't live there-I am quite a bit south...but Potter County is where many people from around here have weekend cabins, and it is where many the hunters go to hunt for their "week away" and the scenery is lovely in the autumn. It markets itself as God's Country in some of the literature. Personally, I'd vote for the Grand Canyon.

double-baked potato soup....one recipe...
bake a potato, mix the "meat" of the potato with cream and cream cheese and butter, or other not-healthy things, to make a creamy broth...put it in a crock, top with cheese a la onion soup, and stick it in the oven.

tossed salad...lettuce, onions, tomato...add raw or cold broccoli, cauliflower, peas, green beans...thus, veggies.

fried as in "the hunters are coming, the hunters are coming..."

Kentucky is God's Country. What's the matter with you people? I've forgotten the source of the quote, but someone, obviously knowledgeable, said, "Kentucky is a heaven sort of place, and Woodford County is the asparagus bed."

Obviously, no one has been to SC. We are certainly more than Charleston, although it ranks high in God's Country. The mountains distinguish us though.

However, I often find inconsistencies and errors in books. Last night I was rereading the Historian, and one of the characters is described as having silvery flowing hair, while several pages over his hair is dark and curly. That was unexpected if annoying.

Well, I'm just outside of Washington DC, with all the charm of the North, and the efficiency of the South, as John Kennedy famously said. No one can mistake this for God's country....

I get really annoyed by blatant mistakes in books. Errors like the one Bumblebeez mentions are annoying and suggest the author was not quite on top of what they were writing. Errors that could have been fixed with a little fact-checking are even worse. I have a good in a similar vein as the Mount Rushton one, which not only uses a wrong name, but actually changes the geographical location of a place.

An author, writing a historical romance that is supposed to happen in the real world, was using an island off the coast of Scotland as the setting. The island was supposed to be one of the Hebrides, which is a cluster of islands off the west coast of Scotland. The name of the island? Shetland. There is no Shetland island in existence, only the Shetlands (note the plural), a cluster of islands off the north-east cost of Scotland. Editor or author mistake? I don't really care, it's one of those argggh! things that can really spoil the reading of a book. It makes me wonder what other mistakes I didn't notice.
