I can't exist without them, although years ago I thought they were worthless! I had always figured that it made no sense for me to listen to a book since I'm a pretty fast reader, and it would waste my time. (And thank goodness it's one of the few things that I haven't gotten considerably slower at!) But then i realised that I could go for power walks or prune bushes, weed, bake cookies, dust and run errands while reading! Or rather listening to a book. It's been wonderful. The biggest problem now is that BOT are going the way of vinyl. And books on CD are a pain, because you can't save your place, going between house and car or portable player. And they SKIP! So after much help from everyone here I'm going to be getting an MP# player to down load audio books from the library. We listen to CDs in the car, but yes, sometimes I miss a passage. The rewind goes to the beginning of the track, which can be way too far! The 30-second rewind would be much better. Our library also has NPR shows on CD, so we can listen to Fresh Air or “driveway moments” collections. I’ve Listened to some Charles Dickens that I don’t think I ever could have read! Perfect for my 20 minute drive to work, those were manageable chunks. But yes, too many characters and names can be hard to keep up with. The reader is so important! Jim Dale, who read the Harry Potter series, was the absolute best. We listened to some Steinbeck read by Gary Sinise, also excellent. I listened to a charming book by Miss Read, read by the most charming reader. During a chaotic period it was my respite. But the next Miss Read book I got, omg the reader was so annoying I couldn’t get past the first chapter. For road trips we always bring 3-4 books, knowing that at least one will not be a good listen, because of the reader or just the nature of the book, I think I will suggest to our library that they have a sampling station in the audiobook area. We especially enjoy memoirs, usually by entertainers. Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett, Billy Crystal have been our favorites. This weekend we started listening to Michelle Obama’s memoir. She evokes a scene very well and she reads it beautifully, but her voice is too soothing and on a long drive through flat land on a warm day I found myself dozing off! I think I will save her for around town! Podcasts are a great idea. I enjoy The Moth Radio Hour And This American Life, hopefully I can plan ahead next time.
