Rhododendrons that didn't flower

This year several of my Rhododendrons grew large fleshy buds which appeared to be about to open but instead grew lots of fresh greenery where the flowers would have been. They seem healthy and flowered for the past two years. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I doing something wrong or is this 'normal' behaviour?

MIPPI I never had problem when I grew them in Melb.
They could be lacking Potassium, do the older leaves have a bit of brown on the tips or yellow spotting on the foliage. If not them it could be somthing else, but a dose of Potash works wonders on flower buds and the colour of flowers and fruit. Probably worth a try.

Thanks Mistymorn for the advice. The leaves look fine and always have. When should I give them the potash? Is it when they next appear to be attempting to flower or now to encourage them to flower?

It's very common for rhododendons to not bloom the year after planting. Most of their energy is going into root and top growth rather than flower buds. Wholesale growers use various means - high doses of fertilizer, full sun plus timed watering - to produce plants with lots of flower buds in their containers so that their sales appeal is maximized. Once they're in the ground they resume a more normal growth pattern. You may have to wait another year or more for blooms.

fertilizer is never the answer .. i have had plants .. of many kinds.. right next to each other do the same ... where are you .. i would suspect winter damage on some.. if you are in the cold white north ... also ... not hardening off properly in fall ... can cause bud failure in spring.... sooo how was your winter.. and fall also ... also.. they a full blistering sun plants .. how much sun do the ones in back get??? pruning is not the answer.. imho ken

The cultivar comes out strongly colored and then becomes less purple as the season advances. It does not leaf out green and then turn purple later. Some purple leaved tree cultivars do yield a percentage of purple seedlings but since tree cultivars are typically considered to be clonal (unlike named seed strains of flowering annuals and annual vegetables) a purple seedling of a 'Forest Pansy' would still not be an example of that same named variety. An exception is certain Rose Family trees such as mountain ashes and hawthorns that may give off apomictic seedlings, that is ones resulting from a particular asexual seed production process on the tree. Such seedlings are clones of the parent specimen. But when seeds are gathered from these trees and seedlings raised from them it is not known under ordinary circumstances if apomixis was involved until the plants raised get big enough to show they are true to type.

Weeping cherry flowered but didn't leaf out completely

That'sbrown rot, an extremely commonplace affliction for any weeping cherry, at least in my area. And is one of the many ailments affecting flowering cherries that majorly impacts their attractiveness. It is seldom fatal and is often worse in cool, damp springs. The link I attached to will give choices for treatment and control, however just pruning out the affected branches is usually sufficient to control the problem....at least for this season.

I would do it now to encourage them.
Have a look at the instruction on the bag

I'm no expert but one of my Rhodies only produced one flower this season and the rest were buds which became leaves. I put it down to lack of water as I was trying to conserve water in that area for the past season. The other Rhodies which were watered normally all produced as usual.

That could certainly be the case with mine. In that case with our restrictions how they are my poor old Rhododendrons may never flower again.

This is the first time my Rhodo did not flower and I just think it is the drought conditions. I was most surprised really but hopefully next year will be better.
