Forest Pansy Redbud didn't flower and not red

Hello, I am growing 2 trees from seeds that I bought online. They are both 1 year old now, about 18" tall and have lots of leaves but they did not bloom, and the leaves were green when they came out, not purple/red. Is this because they are so young or do I get to chew out the guy who sold them to me.?

They may be seed from Forest Pansy, but that doesn't mean that they will come true to type. When you buy a Forest Pansy plant, it is grafted, not grown from seed. You can contact the seller and let him know that they didn't come true to type and that you would like more seed gratis, but I wouldn't chew him out since you can't know if the seed came from a Forest Pansy or not. Each plant has a genetic range, and so a seed grown plant can't be guaranteed to have all the traits of the parent. I would just plan to either enjoy your standard redbud or buy a plant in leaf so that you can verify that it has the colored foliage you want.

At 18" tall I wouldn't expect them to bloom. Trees take patience and a blooming tree will usually take several years before it blooms.

i have lots of self sown RB ... i would guess.. up to 10 years to bloom ...

Ken - sure they do. Just maybe not as early as they do in MI :-) Hairmetal - the zones were not created to provide that information. They only reflect a 30 year compilation of average minimum low temps, nothing more. Even the USDA admits the hardiness zones lack any supporting data that would expand their usage to cover such thing like duration of cold periods, amount of snow cover, soil moisture, amount of winter sun, etc. In their words "Such factors are not taken into account in the USDA PHZM......All PHZMs are just guides. The Sunset zonal maps may be much more applicable to the need to determine appropriate chill periods, as they DO take many other climate issues besides just winter lows into account and are far more detailed than the USDA zone system. But they should be takes as guides only as well. Eastern redbuds are listed as appropriately hardy for all 24 of the Sunset western climate zones, yet they certainly do not thrive in them all equally well. Most struggle up here in the PNW and tend to be short lived at best.

Nova, I found it at a local nursery called Fairfield Farms, on SR46, just west of I-4. I was looking at all sorts of small trees, and thinking about eastern redbuds or maybe flowering nectarine, when they showed me this one, and I was SOLD! Pricey (to me) but a beautifully shaped and healthy looking tree. It's Part 2 of our 22nd Anniversary Memorial Yard Project! (Part 1 was the Ali Baba fountain.) And Sandygator, now I'm envious of YOOOOU! Manure!! I wish I had a truckload!! Still haven't made it to the mushroom farms, but I swear I'm going to get there in the next couple of weeks! Somehow!! Thank you so much for your help! I have included the photos you asked for below. Our landscape designer recommends that we keep the supports in place for around one year and take them off somewhere around Nov. 2016. So you don't think we need to ask for a different FPR tree? Are these common enough problems that we might end up with similar issues with any FPR tree we get? Thanks again so much! Here is picture of the full trunk. The split wound is at the very top middle of the pic., to get an idea of how each of the wounds are located to each other. Here is a close-up of the bottom of the trunk. Here is a better picture of the support lumber from the side. And, here is a close-up of how the support lumber is attached to the tree. It depends, Embo. Roses...in fact all the rosaceae family seem very affected by replant syndrome (I would be the first to admit it is still not fully understood by me) so I wouldn't plant a related plant in that spot for 5 years or so. There are various tricks, such as planting in cardboard boxes (using fresh soil) and, a few years ago, there were some really interesting experiments done using zeolite (along with various arbuscular myccorhizae (sp?). Soil sterilisation is still used (not by me) and, in fairness, it hasn't been an intractable issue - tends to stop the endless shuffling about of plants a bit but hery, there are so many choices. Replant is a different kettle of fish than verticillium (which is still affecting my redbud, rootstock or not) so I would never plant a cotinus, redbud or other susceptible plant in this spot. I know replant is often not much discussed in the US - what would be your take on that? I struggled, over on the antique rose forum, to explore the issues surrounding this mysterious (and according to some people) imaginary, plant syndrome. It is one of those things which are a 'given' - much like soil amendments...until proven otherwise.

Sexual maturity for that species is generally 5-8 years depending on how happy it is. And I agree that from seed it is a crapshoot. Maybe leaves will change color, maybe not.

The cultivar comes out strongly colored and then becomes less purple as the season advances. It does not leaf out green and then turn purple later. Some purple leaved tree cultivars do yield a percentage of purple seedlings but since tree cultivars are typically considered to be clonal (unlike named seed strains of flowering annuals and annual vegetables) a purple seedling of a 'Forest Pansy' would still not be an example of that same named variety.

An exception is certain Rose Family trees such as mountain ashes and hawthorns that may give off apomictic seedlings, that is ones resulting from a particular asexual seed production process on the tree. Such seedlings are clones of the parent specimen. But when seeds are gathered from these trees and seedlings raised from them it is not known under ordinary circumstances if apomixis was involved until the plants raised get big enough to show they are true to type.
