I have been trying to germinate native seed for a few years with limited success. I bought some seeds which I think were fresh seed, put a few of each on wet tissue in a container. Within days some germinated and I put them in tubes in seed raising mix. It is less than three weeks since I received the seeds and already have Euc. ficifolia popping up, the E. macrocarpa has also begun to grow. All five varieties have been potted up. I have never had such success before. I have old seed as well and not much happening there-yet.

Marvelous results Ann, I have never tried many natives, except grevillea,
but they sprout anyway without being planted so I cant count that.
Good on you I hope you get many good plants from those seeds.....MM.

Son-in-law who is a SAMI (small arms marksmanship instructor) in the Navy gave me one of his old ones. Now it's no good for long shots, but the bloody buggers sure seem to get the idea when there is semi-auto fire tracking 'em across the yard and up a tree. I do use a tasteful shade of water-soluble green.... ;-)

Let it bloom then snip it off. It would be better for the roots to do it now, but letting it bloom won't kill it. When it's suggested to remove buds, that's the optimum thing to do for faster root and plant developement. Not doing so just lengthens the time it takes for your little cutting to get bigger. Letting it bloom may actually help with feeder root developement as blooming demands more moisture and nutrients. The harder it tries to support the bloom the more roots it grows to take up these nutrients and water. At the same time though, this energy could be going into making a stronger plant.

That looks good. Where can I find a few seeds at? I would like to give it a try. ***** Aunt Ginny's Purple is listed almost everywhere. Tomatogrowers.com lists it and their prices are reasonable and service is excellent in terms of shipping and all else. There are many other good sources as well. Jan, Probably, the reason they are taking so long to upload to photobucket is that they have too many kb to start with. If you reduce them to below 100 kb before putting them over to photobucket, they will upload and download much quicker and you will still get a large and beautiful picture. I have also found they do not work too well between 1-3 pm our time, perhaps it is after hours for them in USA. BTW, your lilacs and photos are superb.

Did I say three weeks? It was two weeks tomorrow I got the seed!! I checked the sale docket and it was dated Jan 26. I bought the seed on Ebay and I think it must have been fresh seed-a collection of 3 eucalypts, a Golden Dryandra and a Black Kennedia. All germinated and are in tubes or punnets. Mind you, I see a Honey Grevillea coming up that was on a previous batch and did nothing till I soaked it and put it in a deep tube. Maybe it's the seed raising mix. I bought a 25 litre bag rather than the small ones and it's Richgro. But the other germinated seeds are all in seed raising mix

I've never had much luck with mail order seed. I have had lots of luck with my own collected seed though. I just visit friend's houses in the bush and collect seed from there. The fresher the seed, the more likely it is to grow in my experience.
