Anyway, what you've described (looks just one one day and wilted the next) sounds just like the work of squash vine borer. Look along the stem to see if you can find the tell-tale holes. You should examine the lower part of the stem for problems, regardless of whether your looking for the squash vine borer or not. Call your local county extension office to see if the timing is right for this pest to have emerged. It might be a possibility that far south.

Hi sunshine - I'm pleased that the sunshine is lifting your spirits some, today. It is hugely difficult to lose a loved one, someone who has been really close for many years. Sometimes I feel that the boundary between what we call God's home now and this realm of life is not as great as we have thought. Perhaps we have come to feel this more strongly as we have heard people tell of near-death ... or having survived a short death ... experiences. This earth and its people is beloved of God, as well. Sometimes I wonder whether Jesus walks among us, unremarked. Perhaps when we abuse the earth ... and its people ... we should ask ourselves whether Jesus may be standing there, watching ... ... with tears in His eyes? We were granted the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us and sometimes I think that we do not consider or accept that great gift as strongly as we should ... or build a greater awareness of that ministry, that love that is there for us .... for the asking. May God's Spirit comfort your heart in these difficult days. And may you trust that your medical issues may not be as serious as you feared ... and can be treated without great stress. Grandma, who, in her 80s, with greatly curved back, was our main housemother for years, used to say that it wasn't a good idea to cross bridges ... ... till we got there. ole joyful

I actually got a lot done in my garden yesterday too! I pulled weeds and weeds and weeds. I shovel pruned Fragrant Cloud (which was so pretty when I bought it, but just declined steadily ever since) in order to make room for Young Lucydas which I planted in its place. I also planted a Darcey Bussell in the side of the garden and put a top dressing of manure on it. I bought more bagged manure for the side yard garden but didnt get out there, it was too dang hot! I planted my Old Town Novato gallon rose and my Paul Neyron which came in from Rose Petals nursery last week. Also Boul de Niege in the front. Hopefully they will be ok as they are pretty small, but they should be tough varieties and I'll keep an extra close eye on them. I also gave the roses a dose of granular fertilizer and liquid to those in the raised beds that are already in good soil and those in pots. Then Mother Nature came and rewarded me for my hard work with a torrential downpour of rain. :)

Even though masks are required everywhere and compliance is now like 100%, during the holidays you could see evidence of private parties by the number of cars parked on streets and crowds viewed through windows. I also see no more "protests" face shields of paper towns and small 2"x2" squares of plastic draped from a nose. This really slowed down after a lockdown and possibly as a result the numbers have started to come down. But I also think that when people started to see multiple people that they know get sick that behaviors truly started to change. I always view my mask as protecting the people who must work in contact with people and to reduce transmission for the most vulnerable. Hopefully these latest variants will still be controllable by the vaccines being deployed.
