Grass Tree formerly known as Blackboy Tree

I live in Tasmania and have always admired this plant. My son bought me one for my birtdhay and I currently have it in a large pot just inside my front door. It is growning well but know shows signs of brown markings on the new "leaves".

I have now knowledge of how to correctly care for this lovely plant. Can anyone tell me the "do's and don'ts" and if it will still grown happily inside.

Any suggestions would be extremely useful, especially as the plant now looks like it has become sick and I would like to stop any further damage.

Xanthorhoea sp. is the name of the grass tree. Might have spelt it wrong, sorry.

I would want to know where the plant came from, sometimes people remove them from the bush by just cutting through the stump. I have my doubts whether they would reshoot after that assault.

But some are sold in the nurseries so I guess they survive okay.

I would do a search on google and see if you can come up with some cultural needs of your plant.

Sorry cant be much more help. I would be interested to hear from experts about this topic.

can't help with your problem, not sure that they grow that far south they may do i have seen them in the wild in the hottest parts and the driest parts. if it is a very small plant no trunk just looks like grass growing from the pot it most likel is grown from seed but as popi said if it has a well defined grunk then it may have been ripped out of the bush and unless they knew waht they were doing it is most likely not going to grow. from waht i have read they need certain bacteria in the soil to thrive and usually this is where they were growing, so they can be a very site specific plant.

but do some reading up online that may help you along the way.

absolutely ... you compost wood shavings .. until they are compost.. and then use them ... raw wood leaches nitrogen from the soil ... and attacks/out competes and steals .. all water ... its part of the rotting process ... your plants are probably dying from lack of available water ... i highly doubt... they are nitro deficient this fast ... that would be a more long term issue ... this is why i tell peeps.. that if they want to grow grass over a ground stump.. have the dude remove all the grindings... and put in fresh soil... otherwise... the grass sprouts.. turns yellow.. and dies in the middle of summer for lack of water.. sound familiar??? dump it all out.. repot them.. they might come back ... and keep the pot in shade for a few days.. to help them recover ... Some of your photos are a little too close-up which makes it hard to grasp the context. What's certain is that the excavation needs to be somewhat larger than the finished product and then backfilled. I wouldn't label this overzealous grading. It requires a little extra room to perform the construction. So you see the maximum extent of space you have to build a patio. But there's nothing to stop you from shrinking it if you desire. However, thinking that putting dirt back around a tree is somehow equivalent to putting roots back is just not accurate. An amputation cannot be undone. Putting dirt back will make no difference. In spite of that, the tree will re-grow some roots as that's what they do. The ultimate patio size is a factor of desire and space available, but as patios go, it certainly doesn't look too large. Neither does it look like the ret. wall will be abnormally tall. Its curved shape will add strength. It will be stepping or sloped down in some way to generally follow the earth so it's highest section will not extend for great width. Its height is a balancing act between the patio elevation and the surrounding soil levels. Calculate these out and adjust them as you see fit. Raise the patio too much and you will be filling the bottom end or shrinking the patio size. Lower it and you'll be creating a taller retaining wall. Balance and moderation are the key. As I look at the pictures, I don't see anything that can't be worked out to a decent conclusion... if the right design decisions are made along the way. If this were my yard, I'd prefer the appearance of a nicely detailed mortared stone wall, but that requires more skill and higher cost material than the kind of block you're proposing. Therefore, it would be more expensive. But it would look better, too. What you decide on is a factor of cost vs. benefits as you see it. At the end of it all, it will be imperative that you establish groundcover capable of holding soil in place. This is a key to preventing erosion.

which trees to double as shade tree in livestock pasture?

Thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions. I don't really know how hard cattle or other livestock would be on mature trees in other regions and management systems, but I know that lots of trees can survive the pressures of livestock in my system: in my pasture rotations (mostly along the edges but within the paddocks) I currently have a sycamore, pines, alders, red oaks, black walnuts, red cedars, and tulip-poplars, and they've all done fine. Tulip-poplars and red cedars seem like they might be harder to get through the earlier years but not too hard. I hadn't initially thought pecans for a few reasons. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on these issues. First, pecans are such a large tree that they'd give me more shade than I'd need for the animals, and I don't think I want that extra competition with the grass. Secondly, pecans seem like awfully small nuts to try to find in pasture-type grass. Would bush hogging be sufficient to get the grass down low enough to find most of the nuts? Thirdly, what about manure contamination? I would want the shade most of all in the summer. Could I let manure fall under the tree all summer and then safely harvest the nuts immediately afterwards? On the one hand, I figure I need tall trees to grow above the reach of the livestock, which would make a crop that fell to the ground practical, but on the other hand, there are the issues of manure and finding the crop in the grass, so that leads me to think relying on ladders might be a good compromise. Any suggestions for a particular mulberry cultivar? Some varieties seem to have more tree-like form than others. I think I'd want a tree with a trunk that went straight up beyond where cattle could reach and then formed its canopy. ORwoods, you mentioned figs. I do have some figs near my barn, and I've noticed when I've had animals on leads walking past my figs (or when they've gotten out of the fence) that they've never seemed interested in the fig bush. Are there specific varieties of figs that could better be trained to more tree-like form (as with the mulberry)? What about kaki persimmons? Would they even get big enough? Could I get extra height/trunk by grafting a kaki 6 foot high on a D.v. rootstock? Could that work?

Okay I got the response from the local extension office and here is the diagnosis: "The pictures of actual fruit are showing symptoms of bird damage. Grackles and Starlings will visit the fruit when about the size of a dime and peck, scratch and scar the fruit to cover themselves with citrus oil which serves as a mite repellent. Unless you cover the tree at that time of the year with a bird netting, there is not much you can do. See: http://www.plantanswers.com/citrus_damaged.htm . The brown spots on your apple leaves are caused by a fungus of some sort. Most any fruit tree can be sprayed with Captan fungicide solution. Follow the label directions. Also, even some of the healthy leaves are yellowing, which indicates nutrient deficiency. Several things can cause the symptoms: 1) lack of enough nutrients in the soil; or 2) a root system that is not pulling in the available nutrients because of drought stress, too much water, and competition from weeds/turf grass. Even the fungal spots on the leaves may be worsened by a nutrient-stress issue. First, you may want to check the soil pH and nutrient level by submitting a soil test. Second, remove all weeds/turf grass 18" to 24" out from the main trunk and apply a light layer of an organic mulch such as leaves, dried grass clipping (from grass that hasnÃ¯Â¿Â½t been sprayed with a broad-leaf weed killer). Third, monitor soil moisture to make sure that the trees are not too dry, nor too wet. Also, dried leaves on a living stem is a good indication of soil/moisture stress. Dried/dead leaves on a dead stem may indicate a canker or gall or wood boring beetle issue. I don't know if they would like it indoors. Normally they grow in dry forest or in the open, so they like a fair bit of sun. If all goes bad you can actually burn the leaves, and they will come back better than ever. I think there have been other threads about this last year. I would put it outside with at least half sun, and keep the water up to it for a while (not soaking) and see how it goes. I don't think there is a lot else you can do unfortunately.

Thanks for your ideas everyone. This one was specially harvested with a tag that said the supplier had permission to sell them. We bought it from a Woolworths supermarket. I will try it outside for a while and see how it goes. A search on Google didn't show me too much but I will try again. Thanks once again.

Hi Judydu,
they do not like to much prodding and poking and moving around as in the wild they don't get to move much, overwatering in a domestic situation is a big problem, as is over heating behind a glass windows tend to magnify the suns rays, your winter could be a problem also.
