Strelitzia nicholai is commonly used as a large indoor foliage plant in California, where it can do quite well long term if it is treated well. If you have the room for it, I would suggest keeping it as an indoor plant rather than trying to "dwarf" it by letting the first frosts kill the tops from leaving it outdoors in the fall. They are relatively slow to regrow from the roots if they are frozen back to the ground, and as Cagary says, they don't divide all that easily as the roots are massive. I'd avoid fertilizing them much to try and slow their growth down, and give them enough light indoors so that the foliage doesn't become too floppy. The actual trunks take some time to form, and new leaves aren't really going to increase in height significantly if kept as an indoor plant. Unless you have early spring warmth, this plant is unlikely to recover well from being completely frozen back, although they regularly do so here in northern California conditions, but then again we are USDA zone 9b climate.

I inherited a strelizia reginae when my mother-in law passed away. Looked a lot like yours. I ignored the plant as much a possible, sitting outside on NE> corner of house, watered when it rained. Took in the laundry room before it froze, put it out when chance of frost was over.Last year I built a greenhouse, another story, and was firmly reminded by the dw to take it in. I sat and looked at, Grabbed it up out of its pot and stuck it in a larger one( on potting soil to raise it to proper height, took a stick and packed soil around it tightly. watered it-couple weeks noticed new growth, gave it a small handfull of 888 garden fertilizer, new growth accelerated. Few weeks noticed a funny looking new sprout, Double bloom. Saw why people grow these things. after blooms died, fertilized again (same dose)and have noticed 2 new bloom stalks , along with continued leaf growth. I water it about every three days, 14" pot. just my first experience, good luck, Jim

Are you going to keep it in the house? If so then just trim back the dead areas, put it in as much sun as you can, I'd carry it out on warm days, water less than you would in summer. They are pretty touch plants. I know o a couple of clumps here that have survived below freezing for over 7 days (80's) and none seem to have been bothered by Ike. Plant it in the ground next year and it should bloom for you. The giant one in the backyard blooms year round. Tally HO!

Forgot to mention that my local supermarkets do sell some flowers, but I've never seen them have these flowers. Sam's Club does sell Strelitzia online, but I don't know if they have them at the physical stores too. Then again, I wouldn't need any for me to buy here and ship myself. And the problem with the Sam's Club online thing is that they only sell them in quantities of 50 or 60, and they reserve the right to "substitute" with other flowers. I wouldn't need that many, and I wouldn't want substitutions. Two other places I came across only sell wholesale too, although theirs are slightly lower quantities of 40 stems. A place in Hawaii sells them by the piece, but shipping cost is a mystery, and they haven't responded to email. I've already tried one of the large online flower stores that had a bouquet of Strelitzia advertised, and charged a nice amount, but only sent a couple of old Strelitzia (which they also cut very short) with a bunch of other flowers they took upon themselves to substitute with since they ran out of Strelitzia. Not interested in going that route again, hence I was hoping that someone on here might have ordered these particular flowers online and actually received what they ordered so that I could hopefully do the same.
