Finger lime

I'm highly interested in the Australian Finger lime (citrus australasica). They are very limited in the US at this time, and the only kind available are the green ones. Can these be found in nurseries around Sydney? I'll be visiting there next week.

How fast do they grow from seeds? do they fruit within 2-3 years or just like any other citrus?

I have found that annual dieback is more severe when I fertilise with commercial fertilisers, even when I stick to a weak solution. I now use worm tea and potassium only for the potted ones and this has been the first year that I haven’t had any dieback on any. It’s just slow growing, esp. the bonsai. This is just my own experience of course, but it’s typical for finger lime orchards to suggest light fertilisation or at least definitely a low-phosphorus NPK, as with all Australian plants. Hybrids and New Guinea species would be okay, I guess, since they’re used to phosphorus-rich soils. Anyway, would love to see the progess!

Really depends on cultivar and your local climate. In Queensland, some cultivars apparently crop multiple times a year, but if you’re in usda zone 7 - assuming you’ve got it in a pot and move it indoors - you’re probably going to get scattered blooms starting in winter and then a scattered crop some time in autumn. Again, though, depends on the cultivar you got. My shrubs flower randomly - not all at the same time - but only one crop per year.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick Google and the very first hit was https://backyardcitrustrees.com/products/australianfingerlime They're based in Florida. Indeed, they won’t ship anywhere else.

I tried growing nursery-bought plants (don't know if they were seedlings or struck cuttings) in Toowoomba (alkaline soil) but they were very slow. Then I also bought two grafted ones and planted them there. I dug them out and potted them up a month ago before I sold out there and moved back to Brisbane. These grew fast and fruited within the first year. They are still potted up and showing some growth.

Are finger lime trees very tropical? most citrus is subtropical trees, meaning they may take temperatures a bit below 0Âc.

Fingerlimes are indigenous to my part of the world, which is cool subtropical. They do well, but grow slowly until well established, then stand back for launching.
