Finger lime

I'm highly interested in the Australian Finger lime (citrus australasica). They are very limited in the US at this time, and the only kind available are the green ones. Can these be found in nurseries around Sydney? I'll be visiting there next week.

How fast do they grow from seeds? do they fruit within 2-3 years or just like any other citrus?

I just bought a red finger lime tree from home Depot. If you go to the citrus section and look at the lime trees they each have different tags with the varieties on them. I found one left. It was 39$ I'm in st Pete Florida. It specifically says it can only be sold in Florida not shipped.

sultry_jasmine_nights - Logee's corrected their description to be an "Australian Red Lime" versus the "Australian red finger lime". A number of us had bought one from there (including myself) thinking it was a "red finger lime" and it isn't. What they offer is also called an "Australian Red Centre/Center lime" or "Australian Blood lime". Technically it's a bit related to the finger lime because it's a cross between the finger lime and a rangpur lime (with similar tiny leaves and sprawling wild-growing thorny branches), but the fruit shape is different. The finger limes have a long narrow fruit and the red center/blood lime is more "lime shaped" but much smaller than regular limes. The vesicles are somewhat similar but the red center lime has more elongated sacs vs the true finger lime's bubble-like sacs. samsaraedu - Logees has grafted these on what I believe is some dwarfing rootstock (appears to be a trifoliate like flying dragon") with the wild-growing stems stuck on the top of what will eventually be a short trunk. Evan, I've got flower buds, not yet open. I will probably try and let one of the six buds bloom and get ripe (assuming I can paintbrush pollinate the flowers successfully). I got this as a very young twig graft from Stan McKenzie this spring. I had seen he had acquired a red finger lime which had one or two fruit on last year during a visit to his farm during the fall, so I beat feet back when I knew he had this (which was his first graft from that plant). Mine cost $20 from Stan (no shipping since I was in person picking the baby up). I'm sure it will take a few more years to reach Evan's plant size, but that works for me, since I have to haul my tropicals in for winters!

Bonnie, I too have salivated over all the multi color varieties available outside the US. I have a tiny red finger lime from Stan, which I up-potted to a gallon after I picked it up last spring. Hopefully, I'll up pot this fall after it has grown up some more. I know one of the other members in CA recently posted a photo of theirs in ground and its was a pretty big guy they picked up at a local store. I thought I saw scion wood available from CA or TX budwood programs, when i looked last year. I'm planning a visit back to Stan's later this month to look for new kids. Ken

I tried growing nursery-bought plants (don't know if they were seedlings or struck cuttings) in Toowoomba (alkaline soil) but they were very slow. Then I also bought two grafted ones and planted them there. I dug them out and potted them up a month ago before I sold out there and moved back to Brisbane. These grew fast and fruited within the first year. They are still potted up and showing some growth.

Are finger lime trees very tropical? most citrus is subtropical trees, meaning they may take temperatures a bit below 0Âc.

Fingerlimes are indigenous to my part of the world, which is cool subtropical. They do well, but grow slowly until well established, then stand back for launching.
