Lady bugs

This must seem like a strange question. I have been told Lady Bugs are very good around the garden as they eat the aphids off roses and other plants. Can someone confirm this and if this is the case can you buy Lady Bugs from anywhere?

Definitely good guys, Poppy. I've never heard fo them for sale, but I would thing the state Ag site might be a start. Your garden is OK if you have lots of them around.

The red ones are goodies. There are other coloured ladybirds but I'm not sure if they're good too.

It's 60 x80, roughly. I think by added the extra border piece on two sides would make it 62x82. People tend to send smaller blankets for donations to the ministry and the director, Moussa, asked if we could make larger quilts. I think this will be a good size. Moussa has started schools in the country and I believe has about 1000 children. Kids that have sponsors receive a bag of food (rice?) once a month and a blanket when available to take home to the family. The oldest girl from the first children's home has gone on to college.

Are organic pesticides bad for lady bugs and other beneficial bugs?

Insecticidal soap generally targets the types of insects many beneficials - like ladybugs - prefer to feed on so while not actually harming the beneficials, using it certainly won't encourage them :-) And Bt is a highly targeted bacterial organism so using it generally is of minimal concern to any beneficials. Both need to be applied when a problem is present - neither is really preventative. The soap is a contact pesticide and the Bt is ingested but can be washed off foliage with rains so should be applied when the cats are present and actively feeding.

Should I spray when lady bugs around?

Jennifer, I had the same thing here. About 2 weeks ago, I had Thrips and I just did 1st round of conserve also. When it was time to do second spray, I notice lady bugs. So that night I did not spray. I don't have alphids and Thrips don't have predators except lizards and smaller nail size frogs like what Jasmin has in her garden. But that is my assumption :) I find a lady bug inside a rose bloom asleep ( I think ). I don't know why they are here but they are so all my spraying stop. I deadhead that bloom when I noticed a ladybug so I put it in the ground. Looks asleep They are on stems, branches on leaves, everywhere. I did call the company last year to inquire and it will killed them. As long as it is insects , Conserve will get them. That's what they said... Amanda askedd great questions. Do they eat Thrips ?? jin

The one with 9 spots is the only plant-eater - the rest are good guys.

I know they can buy ladybugs in the US, but I don't know about here.

Hopefully you might get some useful information at this Google search.

We have had a ladybird population explosion at our place, they are everywhere! They are really cute and their grubs do eat aphids, so what more could you ask for in a bug really?
