Lady Bugs - will do they do the work?
Comments (9)I've been watching my lady bugs lately, of which I do not have many. What I've seen is that, for the most part, they're totally unaware of food around them. I don't know how much walking these guys have to do in order to stumble upon a meal, but they're sure don't seem very adept at sensing a meal nearby. I actually took one of my ladybugs, placed it on a leaf with a bunch of pink/red aphids on it, and it walked by the whole lot of them several times before I grabbed a plant tag, scooped one up, and put it right in front of the ladybug's face, at which point it immediately grabbed it and shoved it into its mouth. Again and again this happened, and I finally decided I would just keep the ladybug there as long as I could keep finding aphids to scrape off and hand feed it. I'm sure they do a fine job at devouring aphids on their own or else they would have collectively starved to death by now, and I know the larvae are faster eaters than the adults, but man, was I disappointed to see them walking right by perfectly good food....See MoreHow often should I use my soap/garlic spray?
Comments (6)I don't think you understand how a soap-and-oil spray works. It only kills the insects that have actually been coated with it. If you don't spray it on, say, a ladybug, that bug will not be harmed. I don't know how much a deterrent it is once it's on the plant if it's just plain soap and oil with no garlic (see below.) It's true that while I'm spraying for spider mites, I can get some lacewings, but quite frankly, if the lacewings had been doing their jobs, I wouldn't have spider mites! The garlic is supposed to repel spider mites and aphids. I don't know if it does, but it definitely doesn't repel ladybugs, mantises and bees. It definitely DOES repel mosquitoes. There is an organic anti-mosquito spray on the market made only from super-concentrated garlic that is very effective for mosquitoes but has been proven to be harmless to all beneficial bugs, bees and birds....See MoreBrite Eyes a disappointment (how often should I spray it for BS?)
Comments (12)Well indeed but... it IS marketed as "disease resistant". I did LOADS of research both online and locally to try and discover which roses might work for a newbie in a bad BS zone, and this one looked promising. Not only the "official" reputation, but also a large nursery I spoke to in this region when I was trying to find it last year recommended it for that reason. BTW, this is the info on the starroses page "The most blackspot resistance climber we have ever introduced! Brite Eyes(TM) is another breaktrough rose bred by the famous Knock Out® Breeder, William Radler. It has an amazing salmon pink color and a pleasing fragrance. The compact growth habit makes it perfect for smaller gardens. The first of many winter hardy and disease resistant climbers we will introduce in the coming years." But, it would appear that for whatever reason it's not as disease-resistant as its KO cousins. I can understand a marketing department wanting to jump on the KO bandwagon, but if a plant piggybacks on that reputation and then DOESN'T do well... I wonder how that will play out? ::muses: In any case, my primary goal right now is to try and get it through its first year and hope that it starts to cope. All suggestions to nurse it along welcome!...See MoreBasil plant sprayed with bug spray
Comments (2)Oh my! That's too bad. I wouldn't eat them at all; what I can suggest is to try and remove the parts or the tops that were accidentally sprayed and flush the pots with lots of water in case any of it got on the soil. In a few weeks when they grow back, they should once more be edible. Good luck....See MoreJennifer (7b)
