bramley apple trees?

Hi

I'm after a couple of Bramley apple trees for my garden. I've found out that it's considered a 'heritage' tree here, though in the UK where I hail from, they're everywhere... ;)

I've contacted a number of 'heritage' nurseries and they're all telling me the same thing, esp in South Australia, that drought is making production impossible.

Does anyone know where I can get one from?

A nurseryman in Tasmania usually propagates the Bramley apple (a great cooker) each season along with scores of other heritage varieties.

You can write to him:

All of his varieties are grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks to keep the trees manageable, easier to net and they frequently bear in their second season! Now is the time to order so write or call him for his catalog.

Over here we divide apples into 'cookers' and 'eaters'. Cookers are too tart to eat raw. Eaters can be cooked but cookers are rarely eaten raw. I've not heard of Bramley being used for cider, though I don't suppose it would hurt to try it. (We refer only tothe alcoholic version as 'cider'). I have had Bramley apple juice but it is pretty tart and would need to be mixed with a sweeter variety IMO. Bramley is used here essentially only for cooking eg tarts, pies, crumbles and purees. It makes lovely baked apples because the centre cooks to a frothy puree, but you need to cut through the skin around the circumference of the apple because otherwise it will explode.If you want a pie with visible slices in it don't use Bramley. It makes excellent apple sauce to go with pork because, as I said, it requires no sieving or mashing. It purees itself. You might want to add sugar for a sweet applesauce.

It can depend to an extent on vigour of the tree which is often down to root stock. In general bramleys have quite alot of vigour putting on quite alot of upright growth. In your case I wonder if the tree has taken on this shape if allowed to carry alot of fruit while young. The heavy fruit pulling down the young growth which by picking time has often set into the shape you now have. Your actually likely to get a bigger crop with the growth hanging down as the sap instead of going into rampant growth wood will build up flowering growth instead. If your not happy with the trees shape and it is still young when dormant in winter cut back the weeping branches to an upward facing bud (considering they are mainly going to be facing down) hopefully in spring new growth will take on an upward route which you can then train to your required shape but once again remember to thin the fruit while young so as to not have to much weight pulling down on the branches. Just my thoughts on the matter
