I just found this thread while searching for Norfolk Pine transplant information and what I read saddens me. I have a Norfolk in a large container that I was planning to finally put in the ground. It's grown too large for it's pot and is about 8 feet tall. Just like everyone else with one, I bought mine for Christmas. It was 10 years ago when we were moving from Baltimore to Orlando. It was tiny but it made me feel so much better about the Holidays. 4 weeks later when we moved into this house the cute little tree found a home in the patio. A couple years ago I moved it outside thinking that if I didn't do it then I would never get it through the patio door! The tree means a lot to me and I hate to just get rid of it. I don't think I'm ready to 'be done with it', although I'm sure that's good advice.

it will need to be hardened off ..... moving from indoors.. to outdoors ... you can not take it straight into sunshine ... you could un pot ... separate.. repot in separate pots... and keep them in dark shade for a week ... light shade for a week ... then filtered light .. perhaps sun at dusk or dawn ... the time lengths also take into account the disturbance of the roots from potting .... and then into the sun ... and you could always keep one potted.. in case you kill the others... you will have a fail safe ... eric.. if you cool the grass around a house ... wind will bring the coolness into the house ... your roof and insulation ... are supposed to take care of what hits the roof ... and with the trees further away ... what will not hit the house.. is the leaves falling off and choking your gutters... seed pods ... roof rats who use trees to get up there.. etc .... ken

Thanks for the quick reply! Perhaps. It’s hard to tell in the first photo but the tree is in partial shade. We’ve actually taken it outside every year to give it a boost and never had a problem. we've found it actually helped to strengthen the trunk because it had to fight the wind just a little. It really started having issues after repotting which happened about 2 weeks after that photo. She’s on little rollers now so we’re able to move her to the shade easier. My dad just confessed that he didn’t repot well enough and the poor thing fell over during the night and spilled a lot of soil. Not sure it’s related.

Just a little FYI. It isn't Scot's ie belonging to someone called Scot. It's Scots ie coming from Scotland. "I got an eastern white pine today! I wonder where I should put it." We all do this ... buy a plant on impulse and then wonder what to do with it. But really you should firstly be looking at your property and thinking about how you will use it, where you will walk, sit, work etc. Where you want or already have sun and shade. Deciding what it needs in terms of shapes, colours, screening, vistas. And only then looking for plants which fit those criteria. So far your posts have been about searching for specific plants, many of which don't exist or you can't grow in your climate. That is collecting, it isn't gardening or landscaping. You don't buy the curtains before you build the house. You fit the plant choice to the conditions, not vice versa. Rosaprimula gave you some very good information and advice on another thread. And you haven't given us any visual representations of your yard to work with. We don't know if you have mature acres or a new mini plot.
