Early fig - recommendations?

We have a White Genoa fig tree in the garden that is laden with fruit at the moment, but still weeks (months?) away from harvesting. Sometimes we only start harvesting in May/June.

Therefore, I'd like to grow an early fig, so that we can eat figs some time in December or January. Is that possible?

Did a search and read that White Adriatic, Archipal, Black Genoa, and Cape White are considered early figs.

The earliest fig seems to be Cape White that has fruit in January. The others start in February.

Do YOU have any suggestions as to really early figs? Which fig tree is doing really well in your garden?

All your suggestions are very welcome. Thank you. :)

We have an un-named fig in the garden that has produced one lot of fruit and now has its second. These probably won't ripen. Could send a cutting in winter.
Also have 'Black Genoa' and a fig called 'White'. They're too small to tell whether they're early or not. They should fruit properly the year after next.

When we lived in Johannesburg we had a big Cape White that gave us two crops a year ( The figs are how I got my oldest daughter but that's another story!) We got fruit in November December and again in April May just before the frosts.

HI .... welcome to GW ... there is a VERY ACTIVE fruit forum.. and they sometimes do things much differently than the tree people ... and the experts in each forum dont regularly cross over ... so you might want to do the same post there ... also.. i wold suggest some fast googling.. to at least get you some primary knowledge ... not many people are going to give you a full thesis on your project ... which is basically what you are asking for ... finally.. i dont understand this part: If I optimize the maximum potential of my fig tree how soon can I start harvesting? if your plant is already fruiting [which is what you said] ..... there is NOTHING you can do.. to make the fruit ripen faster than nature will allow .. there are very clear natural laws as to how long that process takes the plant ... from flower to mouth, one might say ... on the other hand.. if you mean.. is there some way you can make your tree grow larger.. faster.. to have a bigger crop ... the simple answer is.. grow the roots.. and the tree will follow ... its very hard to grow trees in pots ... and even harder to grow 'production' trees in pots ... that is not to say.. it cant be done.. i am simply suggesting you are really trying to do it the hard way .. is there a reason you cant plant in mother earth???? good luck ken

Easier said that done isn't it? Every Spring and Fall, I move my potted trees back and forth, sometimes a couple of times per week. After it looks like it's becoming a futile waste of time, I finally stop until next season. But what makes this do-able is these two hand trucks from Nursery Enterprises for moving large potted plants. The bigger one has allowed me alone to do the work of a team of men--all without damaging my expensive pots. How early in winter can I root prune fig trees

Most of a plant's energy reserves is stored in the form of starch in root pith, but no matter how you slice it, some of the roots are going to come off at some point if your plan is to root prune. I think there is an advantage in repotting after leaves drop ion fall as opposed to doing it in early spring - because the roots can still do a LOT of growing after leaves drop. Fortunately, the energy required to open leaf and flower buds in spring is already present in the form of starch reserves at the base of each bud. It's ok for roots to be visible at the surface. In fact, exposed roots are often intentionally cultivated as a point of interest, especially in bonsai. The image shows a very young schefflera being trained in the root-over-rock style. Your tree appears to have a combination of mechanical damage (like cuts and bruises would be to a human) and some symptoms related to root health - likely over-watering, or perhaps a high level of salts in the soil, or even both. How to prevent the mechanical damage is self evident. The cultural conditions you provide are central to preventing the necrosis at leaf tips and margins. Soil choice, watering habits, light and temperature levels, and your fertilization program should be reviewed to determine what aspect(s) of those influences are forcing the plant to operate at or near the limits of what it's genetically programmed to tolerate. Figuring it out isn't that difficult, and simply hitting the reset button and embarking on a course that eliminates limitations affecting the plant to the greatest degree possible is probably the wise choice. My suggestion is that you take advantage of every learning opportunity you come across, because learning by trial and error is a painfully slow process, one that very often leaves us in a rut and thinking mediocrity is a destiny rather than a phase we're passing through and about to leave behind. I've been out of the picture for a while and just came back to see the post about figs. I have some Malta Black which has two crops and, from memory, the first crop was just after New Year. I have struck some and I can send one or two in winter. Email me directly if you're interested.

Hi spatz

Here in Hobart I have fruit on my archipal, celeste fig and prestons prolific. The archipal is nearly ripe and will put some plastic around the plant and see what happens. this is the method used by some of the people in the fig forum who live in the Pacific North West.

I hope this helps spatz...I got the archipal fig from Graham Brookman who has the "Food Forest" in SA. Also the Rare fruit society in SA have a good collection.

Thanks heaps for all those suggestions and offers for cuttings.

I will take you up on your offers, Ray and Pepino. Hope you get my emails.

Will also look up some nurseries for some more varieties. Cape White and Archipal sound good to me. Must look into the rare fruit society. Have been meaning to do so for quite a while.

Pepino, great to see you back here again. You were missed at this year's TommyFest. The Black Malta cuttings you gave me last year didn't make it but the White did. Of the other cuttings, almost all the grapes made it and one of the pomegranates. The rest sprouted but subsequently died.

I didnt know this but will do this next time. I lost some fig cuttings as well and have just read that you need to put them in the fridge for a couple of weeks before you plant them...

I've just joined this site and have an interested growing a few different varieties of figs in my garden. I have a white genoa and is really prolific with fruit twice a year.
