Groundcover under deciduous tree

Does anyone know of good evergreen groundcovers to be planted under a deciduous tree? It doesn't have to be a low one, say anything under 90cm? I was thinking of Ajuga Reptans (Bugleweed) but wasn't sure if that was OK since it may have to take full sun during winter.

Should beOK here in WA. Have you thought of trying some bulbs? They only need winter rain, and there are other perennials which could spread there but do not like our summer sun. It will depend a lot on just where in WA you are. There's a pretty perennial Nemesia which seeds easily and smells good, but have you tried a nurssery or Bunnings garden centre where they have a good selection of ground covers and cottage garden plants. There are prostrate Grevilleas which would give you winter colour.

Thanks Annabel, I think I'll stick with the Ajuga Reptans if you think it will be OK. I'm in Perth.

I have a Western redbud in a fairly shady spot. Mine was a foot tall when I planted it in 2008; now it's five feet tall and just bloomed for the first time this past fall. (When it grows another three or four feet, it will start getting more sun.) They don't typically bloom until they've been in the ground for a couple of years, so the fact that yours has been blooming repeatedly leads me to believe it was already fairly old when you planted it. This could be the reason that it hasn't grown noticeably. If it was rather large when transplanted, the transplant process may have damaged its root system significantly, so it may have needed to a few years for its roots to recover. In the wild, Western redbuds often grow as understory trees beneath other, taller trees. They may look prettier if they receive at least partial sun, but I've definitely seen them surviving in dense shade in quite a few different locations.

Don't assume, because you'll just be wasting time and money thinking that just because it's planted or mulched the dog won't dig. Since you live in Denver won't don't you use river rock which is used a lot in xeriscaping. I was going to suggest using Cirsium vulgare, but in CO it is a noxious weed, because your dog wouldn't dig that up so why don't you look at Yucca that are hardy, not a groundcover but some green in the RR wouldn't look bad. It is difficult for lawn to grow under the canopy of any large tree - too much shade and too little water. Groundcover would be a much better choice. You want to watch about increasing the soil level around the tree - as much as a couple of inches of extra soil or too much mulch can effectively smother the roots and eventually kill the tree. Just replace soil to level of the removed sod, only. Some possibilities are ajuga, vinca minor, liriope or mondo grass and winter creeper (Euonymus fortunei).

I think the ajuga is an excellent plant, there are a few different varieties, variegated, giant, etc, all are great for summer shade and winter sun .Another one you could try is the plectanthrus also many different varieties, the native violet, and some of the small leafed mints if the ground is moist.

Thanks kirstenZ, now that you brought it to my attention, I am considering the plectanthrus for another part of the garden bed - it's a pretty plant.
