I have never grown an agapanthus in a pot, but they are very tough plants and grow just about anywhere. I think your problem is probably that they are pot-bound and need room to grow. They have a very big succulent type of root system.

I would move it on to a bigger pot if you can. If you can't go to a bigger pot, then divide the plant into two or more, depending on how big it is, and that will give it space to grow.

Another reason for not flowering could be that it is not getting enough sunshine. They will grow in shade, but need sun to flower.

I just had a look at your website. I noticed you were growing your plants indoors. I think this is the reason for your lack of flowers. Although you have them near the window, I think it is not enough. Do you have a sunny spot on a balcony or somewhere?

Another thing I noticed was the new shoot on your Mr. Lincoln rose. I think this is coming from below the graft. It will not be Mr. Lincoln. It will be from the root stock. It is best to remove it or it could take over the rose.

There is a slight change of scenery so to speak as we have moved houses 3 times in as few as 2 years. But somehow our Agapanthus has survived the same cannot be said about our hybrid tea roses though. Our Mr Lincoln & Just Joey (bought from Swanes in Dural, Sydney) have both withered and died. So has a locally bought Gardenia.

Our Agapanthus is truly amazing, it is bordering on the 'Believe it or not' category. I'm a lazy bugger and forget to water it most times of the week but somehow it is still soldering on. It's unbelievably hardy. I've read on sites including this one that it loves lots of heat & sunshine. Must be why!

It does look like it's just not getting enough light wpau, the agapanthus looks very long and spindly from lack of light and thats why it wouldnt be flowering either, it really needs to be in full sun to flower properly and it looks as if you have it under cover there

Hi I grow plenty of Agapanthus here in the garden soil and I know how wide their roots grow. I have pulled up some that have had roots over one metre long more like a giant Octopus than a plant.. Your other problem could be overcrowding might be a good idea if you divide the plant and just have the one in the pot....I would aslo repotted more than every four years because of those big roots there may not be much potting medium there.

Yes they are a very hardy plant and I never water mine out in the garden and the little rain we have had this season is enough to keep them alive. Its a shame you cannot get them outside but from your Pics I do understand your problem. Nothing like having your own patch of the Good Earth..Good Luck with yout plant.....Cheers..MM.

My agapanthus did not flower either and some are in shade and have been down the bvack for three years. I have never divided them so is that why they haven't flowered? Jan

Hi Jan,

I don't think they really care too much about being divided. I'm pretty sure it is the lack of sunshine which is causing your problem. As a suggestion, why not dig a couple of plants off the sides and put them in a sunny spot if you want some flowers. Leave the rest and enjoy them as a lush foliage plant.

I'll try that thanks Dee. I did have some in a sunny spot but even they didn't bloom. There's no harm in trying to shift a bit from the others though. jan

Is there a time of year that is better for dividing agapanthas? My garden is full of them. I love them and would like to increase the areas where they are growing. Do I need to wait until after/before they bloom?

With all of the pods and seeds produced from just one plant, I was wondering how these seeds can be planted to produce more plants.

Is there a drying time? Storege time? etc.
