Dahlia - help needed

I would like to grow some medium to tall single type dahlias. Can anyone suggest some reliable varieties and tell me where I can get them from.

The local nurseries only sell annual types or exotic looking types.

Hi smithy is it the tubers you are after, if so it is the wrong time of the year to buy them as they are flowering now. But in the Spring they can be bought everywhere, K Mart, Big W, Bunnings, mail order.

I have three colours flowering now Pink, White, and a burgandy with white tips if they are the ones you are after, e-mail me if you want some tubers and I will send them to you for postage later on in the year when they have finished flowering here are some Pics

This last one is not a good Pic, its a dark burgandy and I also have a pink one that is almost the same colour as the last pic they are all a meter tall.

A good place to start would be the many Bulb Suppliers, in the southern states, Mail order or on- line orders.Some of these offer growing notes,

If you are looking for quantity of blooms, leaving the multiple stalks will give you that. The blooms are more likely to be crowded and smaller. If you are looking for superb blooms for showing or for the 'wow' factor, cut off all but one per tuber and investigate stopping & disbudding. You can also look up how to make cutting plants from the extra stems, and get yourself several more plants for your garden. Either way, don't fret, and enjoy the growing season!

If you are overwintering them in the ground, the stalks should be cut slightly below the surface and covered with a tarp and mulch to avoid pooling of water around tubers when they are completely dormant. This may or may not work for you, depending on how cold it gets where you are as well as how wet the soil gets while tubers are dormant. I am in zone 5-6 with lots of frozen earth, so I always dig. However, I did a fair amount of research on overwintering clumps in-ground, as some in this garden zone have been successful when plants were in a protected area like next to a house foundation or solid wall. One grower in zone 5 claims to overwinter regularly with tarps and mulch, but since tubers need to be dug and divided regularly anyway, it doesn't make sense to me to risk leaving them in-ground over winter.

Not enough light. I've grown Dahlias under light and they need atleast 14 hrs of continuous light. I used two CFL lights for mine.

It looks like some old blooms you neglected to deadhead, honestly. The three larger elongated 'buds' at the bottom right are developing seed heads. Sometimes they rot with too much humidity or moisture. Check out this post... http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/3967551/dahlia-growing-buds-with-no-blooms?n=3 You have quite a few tiny buds forming. Be patient... they will come.

There used to be a specialist mail order Dahlia company. I couldn't see it on a google search today though. Does anyone know of it?
