2 long Stems

I know I have posted this in the gallery forum but I thought I would post it here as not everyone goes to the gallery....I think its a divine pic of Abraham Darby....Its amazing...the longer the AD rose stays in the vase the deeper the colour becomes...This one has been in the vase for 5 days!!!

Thanks Michelle. I have been considering replacing Agnes with AD and your "in the vase' experience just about clinches it. Could you tell me how his shrub looks, please? How tall, wide, leafy and whether he gets any black spot?

Hi meryl2 I have a mid standard of Abraham Darby...As it is a new rose for me ,only about 4 months old ...I wont know how it will grow but so far the foliage is dark green and has been disease free...very easy to manage...The blooms last long on the bush...say at least a week..and if you cut them when they are just opening from the bud stage,you wil have a long vase life...the perfume is sweet and light....I love it and would happily recommend it...I will post a photo when I get a chance tomorrow....If you go to my photobucket album you will see some more photos there...see link...cheers..Michelle

I generally left the vines in place on the trellis (they became supports for new growth the following season)... But most seem to prefer cutting down to about 12". A big issue for these is that because they bloom on new growth, they tend to also be late bloomers. Yours may yet bloom after you bring it in if it gets alot of light. It's possible that your plant is potbound. You may want to consider repotting in fresh soil in late winter and fertilize it in spring to encourage new growth to sprout earlier (while indoors) that can mature earlier, in order to get blooms earlier (ie., by late summer).

Leave them for now, they are too young to pinch. The habit of ivy geranium is more vine like, it's not unusual to find some of the stems longer. If you want bushier plants later, pinch back the growing tips when your seedlings have gained a bit more size and have more than one leaf per each stem. Pinch, or cut, just above a leaf - clearly you don't want to do this when a stem has only one leaf. :) There is a latent growth bud located at the node (node = the point on the stem where each leaf is attached). Cutting of pinching off the growth just above that node will cause that stem to branch out. More branching will mean more flowers. Some longer stems on ivy geranium aren't necessarily a bad thing though...leaving some of the longer growth to spill over the side of a large container or drop down from a hanging basket may be desireable too, depends on how you plan to use them.

Leave the wax alone. By "2 things" do you mean new growth? Pale in color and not green? That means that they broke dormancy in an enclosed space (probably in transit). You can snap that off. Take the plant out of the bag, rinse off the packing stuff around the roots and soak the roots for a minimum of 24 hours. Then treat it like a bareroot. The wax is there to keep the canes from dehydrating.

Thanks for the replies guys. I feel better. I think I'm going to at least give them some mulch or new soil on the top but I'm also thinking about giving them a feeding. They've hung in there so well.. sniffle, so proud of my babies. I'd like to think they've made it this long and are still doing okay, so should make it to spring without much trouble. (The soil probalby is a bit compacted.. been sittin in those pots 3 or 4 months... ) But, if I SHOULD be doing something, that's what this post is for. Keep those opinions comin! I'm glad to hear ya'll think they're alright.
