I raised several Nessus sphinx this spring. Found on my Virginia Creeper, so food plant is the grape family. They feed very differently from other sphinx. They rest higher on the vine during the day and come down to the lower leaves (almost on the ground) to feed on the foliage at night. I just "happened" to find them early one morning before they had made the climb to the summit! The caterpillars are green until they are ready to pupate and then they turn this beautiful rich auburn: They are slightly larger in size than the hemaris diffinis (Snowberry Clearwing) and very stout bodied moths. Mine only had the single lateral white line, some have the double like yours. This is a photo of the underside of the moth. Notice how the abdomen curves up? I think this is a really cool moth! Susan

Thanks, Maryl, Sherry, Nat, Mantis, Nancy and Julia! Maryl, SZ and MB do look similar. I've not compared them side by side, but I believe SZ is larger and MB is darker. Mantis, I have only had The Tribble With Blue since last August or September, so can't evaluate yet. Nancy, that is monarda in the back... I have several clumps of a tall fuchsia one (Peter's Fancy Fuchsia) that are visible from the deck and a red one too (Jacob Klein). Julia, I have catmint, coneflowers, bee balm, veronia, salvia (that is pretty much done blooming), agastache (Purple Haze, Summer Love and a couple from High Country Gardens that I added this spring), and probably some other things. I will try to get some pictures this week. I also have some coreopsis (Full Moon, I think), but that is huge and doesn't bloom 'til later. The allium is garden art, so it is always blooming :o)

They're all quite beautiful but I especially like Felicite Parmentier. When it comes to bushes there are few that look better than one of the rugosas, such as Pink Pavement. All of these must be deliciously fragrant.

2021 will be my year for Queen Nefertiti. So beautiful and even better that she's hardy enough for colder zones. Joey, do you grow Jeanne Lajoie as a climber or as a shrub? Mine is on an arbor, and she finally reached the top and beyond this year, passing up her companion, Prince Charles clematis, which surprised me. I've been thinking about moving her to where she can grow as a shrub. That's probably crazy now that she's so tall. I honestly never expected her to reach those heights. I'm interested in how yours grows. I think she would be great as a big, arching shrub. Those buds are just too cute.

Thankyou for the comments, MM the arch is not fancy we use sheep panels for the arch itself, & of cause coppeer log on this one steel posts on the back yard ones they should last for a great many years, the plants are Wisteria, white iceburg climber & Cardinal rose climber on the other side, Tricia the pipe is for newspapers & junk mail it leaves room in the letter box for real mail
