HELLO I HAVE PLANTED 30 ADVANCED LILLY PILLY BACKYARD BLISS IN GISBOURNE VICTORIA AS A HEDGE BACK IN MARCH. THEY WERE NOT POT BOUND WHEN PUT INTO GROUND. ABOUT A MONTH THEY BEGAN TO TURN YELLOW IN THEIR LEAVES SO I APPLIED IRON CHELLATES AND A NATIVE FERTILISER. NOW ON ONE OF THE PLANTS THE FOILAGE IS FALLING OFF, LIKE IT IS DYING. IM A LITTLE STUBBED AS TO WHAT IS HAPPENING, MAYBE THE SOIL IS TOO COLD FOR LILLY PILLY'S, I DONT KNOW. CAN SOMEBODY SUGGUEST TO ME ON WHAT TO DO AS THIS HEDGE COST ME OVER $ 2,000. Yesterday I planted 12 Lilly Pilly "Backyard Bliss". Each plant is around 80-90cm tall and 50-60cm wide at the base, and I've planted them 77cm apart (weird number, I know, it was to distribute them evenly in the space). What I'd like to know is, what do I do now and in the future to get them to grow into a dense hedge? I'd like them to get to at least 2 to 2.5m tall and obviously to join together into a continuous wall of foliage. I've read about "tip pruning" to get denser growth, but I have no idea if or when I should be doing that. I also don't know if I need to put in stakes as they grow. In short, my knowledge pretty much stopped at fertilising and mulching! ;) Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Lindsay

I'm sorry I really can't tell what's happening with those patches on the leaves. Salt build-up? insect eggs? My first suggestion is to take all the pics and some leaf samples back to where you bought the plants, and see what they can suggest. It may just be transplant shock. Maybe the location of the tubs is more exposed than where they were kept, and they are struggling to harden off. I can't really tell what the material of the planters is... if concrete there'd be some possible leaching? Maybe just the narrow pots and exposure is too hot? Could be over or under watering, too much fertilizing, probs with the potting mix. suggest you take some samples of all, including the potting mix brand, back for help from the providers.

Hi! I am in need of some advice for my neglected Lilly pilly hedge. It is currently very holely and thin on the bottom, with many gaps as in pictures provided. I have already taken off atleast 30cm on top, and on sides. However, I’m wondering if anyone would advise to take more off the top which would allow further new growth below, say another third off current height? It already has new growth coming through in lower half. Additionally, it has white wax scale and new growth being eaten by a green grub I have seen, most likely from the Lilly pilly beetle from what I’ve read. What is the best bet to rid of these nasties?
