propagating lilly pillies

We are considering making our 2nd attempt at propagating lilly pillies - particularly 'small leafed'. I don't know what the method's called but (as seen on Briz 31) we scraped the bark back to the white wood, and bound damp spagnum moss around with black plastic and secured. After 2 months we checked and although the roots were small, they had sprouted and so we transplanted into pots. All died. We would to try again but obviously we did something wrong -maybe we needed to wait longer? Perhaps there is an easier way but we need to keep cost to a minimum as we've already spent a small fortune. Any advice on success would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, LYN
