Judith, that sounds like a good plan to me. Actually, my JJ remains in a pot "banished" to my back patio, which receives only about a half-day of dappled sun. Your chosen location sounds a little better, as I don't think I have quite enough sun for ideal growth. I said I'm getting rid of mine, but I have a hard time shovel pruning bushes that don't die on their own. Still, I hate to give a plant to someone when I don't think it will actually do well for them; it's kinda like negative advertising for rose growing. To it's credit, I totally ignore it except for occasional watering, and it is still trucking along. I have had mine only about 3 years. Maybe I should follow the advice above and wait for another year or even 2 to make a final judgment. Meanwhile, Prairie Sunrise is doing beautifully in JJ's old spot. I just got it from Lisa at Countryside last summer, along with Alec's Red. THANKS LISA! Both are gorgeous AND very fragrant! They also are about average for blackspot resistence, which in my area means I have to be diligent with the preventive spraying. No big deal, since I spray everything else anyway.

My JJ blooms as often as most of my HT's. , but it is a gangly branched thing. Here it is ( about 6-7 years old) with lots of buds that will be lovely....just too late for the party that I cut it back for. Ah well. Cut back several in Oct., just a little too late. He did not bloom as well this year in our hideous heat. Can only think I didn't hand water enough, and the sun was too hot at times. I'm in so. Ca. coastal/ 6 hours sun. I adore the sweet scented , big apricot blooms. Poor pic trying to get all the many little buds in the pic. I'm betting these blooms will not be so large. Is it the cold nights? I see this often in my autumn blooms. Still, my neighbor's bed faces west, and hers are summer- lovely. My sun is eastern. Well, that's another topic. JJ is worth your patience, imo. Good luck!

Natasha, haven't yet used the Tumax to create a trellis. Ran across these 20 years ago, found the idea intriguing & picked up a kit for a few dollars. Would think the structural strength would relate to the diameter gauge of the wire selected & the number of anchors used as support. Expect one of the multi-strand twisted or braided cable wires - in place of the galvanized wire roll that comes with the kit - would be much stronger & bear the weight of a mature rose. Since the wire is threaded through the loops that project from the anchors, would think how closely those anchors are spaced also figures into a weight capacity calculation. The tensile strength of the wire plus the number of anchors used along the line should yield a rule of thumb where the weight is distributed evenly along the span. Tumax may have this info with their professional kit instructions on their site - you might noodle around there to find it - or just contact them & ask for their load weight formula. Have used the anchors alone, without wires, as free form supports on a stone facade. Install them on the wall where they're needed as the rose grows & loosely figure eight tie the canes to the anchor eyelet. The anchors are hidden behind the plant. Gives a pleasant natural effect to my eye, as if the rose is doing it all by itself. (Look Ma, no hands!) To allow sufficient space between the wall & the plant, often add another ring or length of rubbery plastic chain onto the eyelet & tie to that as the canes thicken, allowing me to use those spongy noodle ties or green velcro loops. Lenarufus, Nahema is a beauty with toe-curling fragrance. Your wall coloring sets her off to perfection. New here this year as a gallon own root, she's a real charmer. Good growing to all! Sue

I'm in Sydney so it's spring here now ... there is one cane which looks dead on the bottom, but quite a lot of new growth is coming out of it with lot of flower buds so I don't want to prune that! Maybe I'll let it go now and give it a bit of a trim after summer. It seems to be growing strongly, I moved it from Melbourne & also took a cutting which is a better shape but not so many flowers yet. eek, re the bug I had a look on the web, looks like it's a Fuller rose beetle which is also a citrus pest ... I sprayed the lemon tree with neem oil & white oil today & hopefully it jumped out of the tree & isn't resident in the soil around the rose! This is from the web: "The younger larvae eat at the root hairs or rootlets, and the older larvae girdle the lateral roots of the host plant. Such damage to the root system will result in stunted growth since the roots are unable to effectively take up the nutrition it needs."
