ogr for fragrance, ht's are so overated

i have been growing roses for 2 years only , and my 1st question when asking for expert advise was which rose has the best fragrance.i was always told 1 H tea or another, and went about buying quite a few, they are extemely healthy & look great but if you dont stick your nose in them ,forget about smell.luckily i met this wonderful lady who grows old damask's & bourbens, my god you only need to walk near by to get a head full of the most delicous fragrances. cant wait till ordering season is in , to order the real fragrant roses.

I agree with you about OGR's Diesel-not only about the fragrance but I love the different growth habits and bloom forms of OGR's also.I wouldn't be without them.
I must say though that I have smelled some H.T.s that are as good as the OGR's-you just have to give them the sniff test before you buy them.:)

Newer red HTs: Firefighter, Lasting Love, Velvet Fragrance, etc.

well, I will speak up as a fan of Lasting Love (which was sold as Commandant Cousteau until about 2009), but with the caveat that I'm in zone 10, so cold zoners should take that with a big grain of salt. It's my go-to recommendation for the folk who always ask me for a "fragrant, classically formed, did I say fragrant?, red hybrid tea" and, unlike Velvet Fragrance, it is usually available (even now) in well-stocked nurseries. And yes, it is very fragrant, and I use it to win fragrance classes in shows quite often. I love the foliage, which seems to be disease free here in mildew heaven, and you can easily see why -- the leaves are very shiny and thick. I have grown Velvet Fragrance, but only as an own root plant, and it committed suicide in that configuration before it really got established. If I saw Velvet Fragrance somewhere as a grafted plant, I would try it again, but not own root. As for the OP's original question about whether these newer red hybrid teas are really better than Mirandy, Papa Meilland, etc., I would say yes, even though I still grow most of these older ones. On the older plant varieties, the bloom and especially its fragrance, is often superior, but all of them seem to grow poorly, and lankily for me. But I keep them around because I like the blooms when they deign to produce one or two. Papa Meilland is an especially poor grower, with an especially fantastic one or two occasional blooms. Sitting here sniffing a Papa M. right now. Here, have a whiff:

SoCal coastal gardener seeking fragrance
Q

Ok, well call me the Good News / Bad News girl. Good News: the most fragrant rose that I have ever smelled is Color Magic (an HT). I planted one by my former back door and was so amazed that I planted two more. Magnificent wafts of fragrance as soon as I opened the door ~20' away, and that's with avg. coastal SoCal humidity, not Florida. YMMV, but I also loved the GIANT, mutable blooms which, even when cut fully open last a week in the house. ONE bloom will *completely* fill a LARGE room with sweet, sweet fragrance. Bad News: It could bloom more (or I could fertilize more). BUT, more important, it really would have done better for me with regular spray for mildew. Rust is not that big a deal, plant-wise, but in my experience, mildew will debilitate and kill it over time. It's a bloody shame, as Suzy would say. If you spray and have a cutting bed, this is a keeper. More Bad News: You will need to cross-reference mildew susceptibility for the fragrance suggestions above if you do not spray regularly. In particular, Double Delight: 2+ mildew; 4+ rust Rouge Royale: 4+ mildew even in 9% humidity in SoCal Mtns, don't bother Freddy Mistral, Sonia Rykiel: lovely but gone because I didn't spray Fragrant Cloud (and most anything orange) & Tiffany: 4+ mildew Good News: GramHat & Golden Celebration are bullet proof and I could not recommend them more. GramHat is pink, floppy and old-fashioned in fragrance and form, while GC, to me, is such a happy looking bush in bloom, no doubt due to my reaction to yellow, and also has very good fragrance and will try to fill a room. Blooms will blow faster, but it's a great repeater in this area. Good News: Anything Jeri recommends. Seriously. Good Hunting!

Has any WS Rose (HT's, OGR or Mini's) Seeds?
Q

You probably won't find any seeds other than trades for hybrid types (either grafted or own root) - while you could get an interesting rose, they don't come true and might be wildly different in color, shrub size/form, flower type than the parent rose. There are a few places that sell seeds for species roses (Chiltern for one). I've sown rosa glauca and rosa sericea subs. omeiensis f. pteracantha ('Winged Thorn', grown for its ornamental thorns not flowers). Rosa glauca comes true and WS well (even self sows), Winged Thorn germinated on my desk before I even put the pot outside, leaving me to care for seedlings indoors all winter when I hadn't planned to.

That's a definite possibility, Christopher. MANY body bag, inexpensive producers supply roses of similar color to the name on the tag. Add the public's knowledge of the Sterling Silver name and it's a done deal. MANY years ago, I managed a jewelry department for a SoCal dept. store. I grew dozens of different lavender-lilac-mauve roses. I'd taken an enormous bouquet with many dozens of various blooms in those tones and set them on the counter. I can't tell you how many people passed by and exclaimed, "Look at all those Sterling Silvers!". Ironically, there were NO Sterling Silver blooms in the bunch. At that time, I had refused to grow it due to its demonstrated poor performance in my area. It wasn't until I obtained the florist stock of SS, the one I shared with Vintage that performed significantly better, I permitted it in my garden. Kim

Same for me, Diesel. I can actually count only few HTs that smell good here in Oz. But old garden roses are a different story.
I've done with HTs -- not buying them any more, not even climbing sports. Growing habit, delicateness and overal beauty of old garden roses (including DA roses) pleases me more. Please see my posting about Constance Spry -- I'm speechless; that rose is simply outstanding!
PS. Don't forget (hybrid) rugosas too. Most of them have wonderful fragrance, grow exceptionally well in Oz and are extremely disease free.
