How yellow do you want? Jaune Desprez isn't jaune; and Crépuscule and Lady Hillingdon, fine roses both, are apricot, fading to near-white if they're in sun. I think some of the Noisettes are considerably closer to yellow than the ones you name, but I don't know them at first hand. One you might want to consider is Duchesse d'Auerstaedt, a Tea-Noisette: she's a strong plant with exceedingly magnificent large cupped definitely yellow blooms. We have hot summers and my Duchesse is trained against a terrace wall and the railing above it, with a southeast exposure and some afternoon shade, and she's fine. I don't know about hardiness. Here the Duchess is clean, but our climate is dry and blackspot is very rarely an issue....she can get a touch of mildew. My plant is grafted. Currently it's about 15'-20' wide and 8' tall. I don't fuss over it, just keeping a hay mulch on it and not watering it particularly, but this is a kind climate for roses. I help this helps. Melissa

I know it would be a nuisance to change it, but it might be worth a try. You are right that it will still be hot there, and there's really nothing practical you can do about that. Thanks for answering my question about the beetles. I'm obsessed again because I thought I was all set taking off all the blooms, buds and pruning and felt much better about it all because it is mainly the rose blooms that have the most powerful attraction. No. They are just finding other things to chomp on. If it weren't for the darn multiplication factor in my soil and now having to deal with grubs, I don't think I'd be quite as obsessed about it as I am. You are lucky you have a DH to help pick. I want some of those wasps or flies here that are laying the eggs on some of the Maine ones (female thorax). Istocheta something. That would be a nice start and another tool in the arsenal to keep the numbers down. But if the wasps/flies manage to kill off all the beetles, not likely for years to come, they could end up disrupting something else. I read a blurb where they (the egg layers) are being found in your state, but it takes them awhile to fan out just like it did the beetles. When the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the beetle and eat it from the inside out, but they can mate a couple times before they're dead.

Since you haven't gotten any suggestions here, you might try asking in the California forum which seems fairly active since there will be more experience with your particular growing conditions. There are also forums (fora?) for AZ, the southwest, and TX that may have ideas for you, especially if you do a search for "vine" in the box at the top and then click on the "vine in Arizona" option when it pops up to restrict it to just the one forum. I do wonder about the restriction to containers since the containers will kill whatever groundcover is under them. If you do go for this option, use the absolute largest containers you can find to reduce temperature fluctuations, and choose a light color to reflect rather than absorb heat. Water management will be a challenge. I sometimes use large saucers under containers that I can fill with water that the container's soil can wick up as needed.

That makes sense to me. Unless in DA's nursery and experience, north facing, as you suggest, is colder than simply "shadier" spots. In my experience in SoCal, they are the same.
