Sites to I.D. roses

I'm trying to ID a rose.

Has anybody had any great success in doing this via a Rose site?

You know, where you fill in sections on blooms, leaves, habits etc etc?

Hiya Annie-I have had limited success trying to ID roses on these sites but then the roses I am trying to ID are OGR's and pretty obscure.
You will probably have more luck with more modern ones-though so many of them are similar in colour etc.
Why not post a pic here and see how it goes?
If no positive response try some of the urls below.

Well, this little, wee mini is a cutting from the elderly lady next to my sisters who got it heaven-only-knows how long ago from the lady across the back who was elderly when the elderly lady next to my sisters wasn't elderly.
It's one of the cutest little minis with some of the nastiest thorns I've ever seen!!
Even the leaves have thorns!!
Just a bit smaller than Fairy, less petals than Fairy, I think. Basically white with pink tones during maturity but fades again to white when it's old (sort of like our hair!!) and they are in big clusters but they don't droop like Fairy's can. The overall effect is very pretty with all these pink and white blooms.
Perfume is rather spicy, not at all rose-like.
Quite a compact little bush standing no higher than about 60-70cms.
You can get an idea of how small they are by the glass which is quite ordinary sized.

Georgette is a large floribunda from Kordes. According to Help Me Find, Hortico sells it. If not I have it. If you want it and can't get it from Hortico, contact me for info on obtaining a rooted cutting. If you can't find a Georgine, get her another rose similar in name and call it Georgine. as long as she doesn't try to sell it or give it away as cuttings, she can call it anything she wants. After all a memorial rose is just something planted to remember a loved one so a simple plaque stating "In memory of Georgine" would serve the purpose. Memorial Day would work also. I don't have a photo, I didn't own a camera on the month that the man brought me the incredibly large rose blossom. I've compared it to every thing I've ever seen blooming at vintage gardens home garden and at san jose heritage rose garden, and my journal notes about exceptional roses, and no description or image comes close to it. From its shape and style of bloom it appears to have a strong H.P. influence. One blossom has a great weight, for a rose blossom, a hardball baseball came to my mind when it was in my palm. The little scrap of foliage on the cutting the man brought me appeared somewhat typical for a H.T. but these were only 3 leaflet leaves. I would guess from those traits listed above that it could be a first or second generation Hybrid Tea. I would think that it would have been bred in a warm climate because it only opens fully in 80+ degree weather No Identification yet, as of March 9th, 2011. I would guess that in the modern age since patenting that such a rose would not have a great commercial value, because of the limitation from its requirement of heat to fully open, I've been looking among H.T.s that were introduced between the 1860's through the 1940's for an identification, to begin with. I've moved since getting the rose blossom and haven't seen the man who owns the rosebush since, but it is still on my mind. thanks all, Luxrosa

It's beautiful and looks like Jude the Obscure to me. Did you see the bush the cutting came from? The size and shape would help to ID your rose. Opinions on the fragrance of Jude are all over the place, but most agree it is strong and the Austin site says "fruity". In any case, I bet it is an Austiin rose. You could look at the David Austin website https://www.davidaustinroses.com/us/roses-by-type/english-roses and compare your rose to similar ones. Some to look at are Wollerton Old Hall, Desdemona and Claire Austin, all creamier colors, but can become more apricot or peach during cold weather. Sometimes I can hardly tell Desdemona and Jude apart.

dianela, thank you. It's true that traditional rose growing involves a lot of spraying and coddling of the roses. I blame the '50's up to at least the '80's for this. Thirty plus years of breeding inferior roses with only the flowers to recommend them. Thinking back we realize that rose plants have been growing in the wild as perfectly healthy shrubs and vines for eons. Early heritage roses didn't even have the blackspot gene. The blame for that was Persian Yellow genes added to the mix. As indicated by the name, Persian Yellow rose grows in hot, dry climates. Grow it elsewhere and its suceptibility to blackspot shows up. The past couple of decades has shown growers are concentrating on reversing the weaknesses of previous breeding attempts. New strong disease resistant varieties with a good shrub shape are arriving on the market. These are the roses I concentrate on growing, along with older strong varieties. As mentioned before, it is all in the rose genetics!

Well, this is bizarre.....when you go to that site, click on "photos" and just have a look at the range of roses they are calling Marie Parvie...talk about weird!!
The first rose I saw looked pretty much like mine but then the next time I went to the site, there was a definitely pale pink, HT-looking rose viewing...huh?

Yeah Annie-that's what i mean-people are free to upload their own pics of roses there so you get a lot of 'NOT' roses.
It could very well be Marie Pavie or Yvonne Rabier.
It is most certainly a Polyantha-and an old one at that.
I tried refining the search on HMF to white Polyanthas but it just won't bring anything up.Very frustrating.
I will check my rose books tomorrow and make a list of posibles ok?

Annie-from the description and pic I think it could be Little White Pet.Or any of the ones mentioned above. *grin*
The thorns point to LWP though.

Certainly not Little White Pet. No button eye, and insufficient petals. Has the appearance of Yvonne Rabier, especially the foliage. If not, my guess would be Katharina Zeimet.
