My ivy leafed small light blue morning glories bloomed first and got to about four foot tall. The Early morning, or tall mix got tallest at about ten foot and bloomed much later. Because they needed to be sown after frost I didn't see a lot of difference between my direct sown and winter sown. I didn't use the best soil though and my drainage was bad. This year I'm doing more and will be direct sowing for ease of planting out.

I've grown morning glories for years. I've found that on the Gulf Coast, the afternoon sun makes them wilt. I'd say that morning sun would be a better choice. If they don't get enough sun, they won't want to bloom. As far as watering goes, not too little or too much. I usually soak the seed overnight before soaking. I also scratch the surface with an Exacto knife (and try not to cut myself) Hope this helps. Here is a link that might be useful: Deborah's Garden

My Old Glory is in a tub with two other fairly golden hosta. Until yesterday, it sat in this location where it gets morning sun and all day sun actually. But now I moved those golden hosta into the Back40 for safety beneath a shade covering. Not UP yet, but it soon will be. Meanwhile, I'll take another photo of Old Glory to give it individual attention. Yours is looking might fine.

I have no idea if anybody will see this, a good 4 years after your initial post, but HB morning glory breaks my heart. As Darryl pointed out, HB does indeed take forever to bloom! I'm in CT zone 6A, and when I do get some blooms, it's only for a couple of weeks or so before they are killed by frost. I was so excited this year when I bought healthy plants at a different nursery in May, and to my shock, it had about 3 buds that bloomed in a week or so. To my dismay, after that, not a SINGLE BUD formed on the plant, and I am typing this on October 21, 2025. They don't even reseed well, either, unlike my Grandpa Otts. So tragic. Just FYI, I grew a new morning glory this year called Cameo Elegance, a stunner! The foliage is variegated and ivy shaped rather than heart shaped, and the flower is bright fuchsia with a white edge. I hope it seeds itself and blooms next year! I'll save some also.
